Jake says somethings up with the transmission,it's a Triplex,but they've took the compound shifter out of it and been driving it as a 5 speed. Floors are good,roof and doors good,gonna need a little patching on the bottom and a little work on some old jackknife damage,but it is very workable. A friend of mine said he'll be coming through there with an empty lowboy sometime this week so I'm just going to pay him to take it from there. Other than that, she's mighty nice! Thanks, Mike. I was pleasantly surprised to find1. my belly didn't rub the steering wheel2. the old girl drives good3. it seems to have pretty long legs. jakebrake86 Posted May 7, 2014 Share Posted May 7, 2014 I bought a steer axle out from under an ex Waste Management DM that was in the late 80's, and it had wedges. Apparently they spec'd their trucks with wedges on the steer and cams on the back. What were the pro(s) on those things, Al? I've never heard anything good about them. 57 bcr Posted May 7, 2014 Share Posted May 7, 2014 Jake,I guess they do have more surface area contact than a cam brake and are a few pounds lighter. I had them on a Ford LNT-8000 (steer axle).The adjusters were prone to rusting (especially anywhere calcium chloride and salt are used).Then you would get one side working harder than the other,and it pull you sideways in a panic stop. I guess I didn't take the time to figure them out,only wanted to replace them with cam brakes (better) and be done with it.
