countryboy5487 Posted August 5, 2014 Share Posted August 5, 2014 OK I have a question that may seam kinda dumb (I know there are no stupid questions, just stupid people asking questions but that's another story). What is the purpose of having a dump bed with the tailgate mounted on a slant? Just seams to me that you'd get gravel and ect. constantly dumped down the face of the gate. I've noticed that out west they seam to have been used for a while but some are just starting to show up here in wv. Popular Post gearhead204 Posted August 5, 2014 Popular Post Share Posted August 5, 2014 no when paving or spreading gravel truck and pup the gate opens later and closes sooner than a square back gate also then running truck and pup the square back gate will hit the tongue of the pup when the box is fully raised (not good) especially then jack knifed and the latch pin grabs the bottom of the tongue and racks the back of the dump box out of square or breaks off the tail gate at the mounting ears. not a good set up for steering wheel holders! 3 Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

To add what gearhead said if dumping asphalt dumping in a paver gate will stay away from floor of paver. gearhead204 Posted August 5, 2014 Share Posted August 5, 2014 in 1990 we got 2 rd688s trucks with near square tailgates first time the driver raised the box with the tail gate loose he put a 4" upside down vee in the tail gate, I think that happened about 10 min. after hooking up to the pup. never even hauled a load of dirt! Lmackattack Posted August 9, 2014 Share Posted August 9, 2014 I figured an angle gate was so the gate did not get as close to the ground when raising the box and so when the box was down Gravity helped keep the door tight to the box? rsb502 Posted August 19, 2014 Share Posted August 19, 2014 Ding ding ding, couple folks got it right, the angled tailgate is to more clearance when the bed is raised, most trucks built for paving have the angled gate so you don't hit the bottom of the hopper on a paver. I have run basically identical RD's with both 6" slant and 12" slant gates on Rogers bodies and with the 6" slant you had to be careful not to raise the bed all the way so you don't hit the box.
