Hey-I got a question for ya. Have any of you ever run across an alternator-triggered tachometer with a mounting cup,something that could be attached to the steering wheel? I could use one designed to fit in the dash,but 1-I don't have a lot of dash to spare,and 2-I really don't want to cut any more holes in it.There's no room under the dash for a tach,due to shifters,knee room,etc.

Any ideas?

I used an alternator mounted tach once on a pulling tractor, it used a big stainless steel clamp to attatch an inductive pick up to the outside of the alternator.... it was a waste of money!!!!! a distributor "triggered one would be far better!!

Thanks guys;

As it turns out,there's a small size Sun tach on its way to me right now,given to me by a member of the Old GMC Trucks forum. I also already have a full sized one but the bracket and nut are missing;I'll engineer some method of mounting and probably put it in my '57 GMC dump truck. I'd thought an alternator-driven tach might be more in keeping with my old :mack1: Maxville,Your input pretty much confirms what I'd always suspected of that design,not reliable,not accurate etc. Packer,this should work out fine for my truck,as it's already 12 volt. I was hoping to find a tach that topped out at maybe 4,500 or so,mostly so my engine'd look like it was going somewhere. Seems kinda lame to run an 8,000 tach with an engine that won't be seeing 3,000. No problem though,I can just cover the numbers over 3,and set the shift needle for 2,600,and all will be fine.
