Can someone here tell me about the evolution of the E9? Beyond horsepower settings and the "V" pump vs. inline pump. . .

Were there any real variations or updates between the early 400's and the last 500's?

I seem to recall that there were some head bolt updates, could be wrong... any info would be greatly appreciated.

It had a 20 year run in road trucks (give or take), just curious if it was basically the same for all those years.

I own a 500HP that I bought new in '89. I friended a man in PA who worked for Mack. In phone conversations with him about my E9, he claimed that they were sent to Canada making 600HP and shipped to Australia making 800HP..! Strictly hearsay I know. It was interesting food for thought.!

Nothing special about Canadian E9 powered Macks. Up to 500hp unless tweaked by some tweaker outside of what came from the factory.

But how do the early ones compare with the later ones....? I only recently found out about these 1005 cu.in.... predecessor to the 998 cu.in.??

They were first called EM1000's till early 80's then changed to E9. Cubic inch never changed. Turbos where changed for different hp ratings ex. 400 450 and 500 was all done with fuel and injectors. Later around ~ '92 the pumps where changed to inline models. The marine and tank versions had a completely diff settings. U can see a copy of the ad in my profile pics somewhere if u care to look.

Production numbers of the E9 were 3,768?!?!? Sounds low considering all the E9s sold to Australia, Canada and the US..! If that's an accurate number it means my Superdog with the E9-500 just went up a few notches on the "I love my truck." scale.(If that is possible!)

Thanks Mike for posting the sleeper on here that I bought, it is in real good shape. and Thanks Al for posting the pictures, I would have like to see that truck when it still had a sleeper on it. Al did you say that it had an air shift 6 speed behind that e9. Thanks again guys have a safe weekend. Ron

I reckon there would have been over 3700 sold in Australia easily dunno for sure but they sold bucket loads in Superliners and Valueliners
