Kelly and Barry;

Do either of you show a listing at all for shoes and wheel cylinders for my '45 EH? If it'll help I can go find the build sheet and possibly get some part numbers (1945 vintage :D ).

Thanks!

And BTW-lower priced or mid grade will be fine-I doubt I'll be logging too many miles in this truck...

On the question of brake shoe grades -

Do the softer (less expensive) brake shoe grades provide

any better stopping power, besides being rated for lighter gross weights?

And, do they wear faster because of that?

I know that for every day use, most guys use the top grades for long life.

But we, as hobbyists, really don't need that in most cases. We don't

usually pull any real weight, or put on any great mileage.

New brakes will probably outlast me in any of my old trucks.

Would softer brake shoes actually be better for us?

:SMOKIE-LFT:

They're drum brakes. I was told they have a tendency, when on a truck that isn't used much,to build up dust between the lining and rhe shoe web, which eventually pushes the lining out, causing the brake to drag and eventually the lining will loosen from the shoe. That's what this seems like.

Thanks!

Wondering what kind of prices you guys are getting on your brake shoes around the country?

Q's

Q Plus's

Not sure about steer brake prices, but last time (about March this year) I bought Q and Q Plus shoes and hardware kits I near fell over. I am on a pretty good price with my supplier for all my brake parts, so I would hate to think what retail or list prices are. But in Australia I paid $93 a pair for bonded shoes (drive axle) and $24 for hardware kits(springs, rollers, anchor pins, etc.). 1 hardware kit does 1 pair of shoes. Linings are EF grade, in between soft and chew your drums out hard. With all highway work I expect around 3 to 4 years out of drive brake linings (depending on the driver). Not sure how this compares to U.S. prices with the exchange rate around 96 cents.

Well folks it appears you really need to shop around. I'm doing a major rear brake job on my 95 CH. This includes shoes, hardware, drums, wheel bearings, seals, camshafts, bushing kits and chambers. Fleetpride (having the corner on the aftermarket around here) quoted almost $2000. The IH dealer I use quoted around $1600. I bought the parts from my Mack dealer for about $1200.
