There are some exceptions, I cannot recall exactly what they were, but there are cases where gold bulldogs are installed on Mutts. My father's Hayward F-Model had a 300 with a 5 speed and an original Rockwell 2-speed rear and had a gold dog. I will email Harvey Eckert and see what exactly the story is and post it here. As promised, I emailed Harvey Eckert, who corresponded with Don Schumacker (who many of us know to be the Curator of the Mack Museum and the Archivist) some time ago, and kept the response, which Harvey was kind enough to send back to me:Don writes: "The Mack Bulldog ornament was patented in October 1932. It was released as Part Number 4BF26. In December 1937, it was redrawn and the part number changed to 27RU217. This was a chrome-plated zinc die casting. It did not change until December 1941 when the finish was changed to a painted #775R Mack Gray finish. In September 1944, the finish reverted back to chrome-plating.In September 1947, the part number was raised to 217RU217A; the attaching studs were changed to cast-in female thread brass fasteners. The P1 version was chrome-plated. In June 1967, the 14 karat gold-plated P2 was released. In June 1968, the gold plating was replaced with 14 karat gold alloy.In December 1979, the ornament was redesigned to incorporate shorter ears and tail to make it more friendly when using it as the handle to tip the conventional models’ hoods. The part number was raised to 217RU217B and the patent number was changed from 87931 to 1,387,477. The P1 part was again chrome plated while the P2 finish was “gold flash.” Starting in 1966/1967, the original “gold” ornaments signified that a vehicle featured the Mack Maxidyne engine and Maxitorque transmission. All other Mack trucks used the chrome plated ornaments. Starting with the introduction of the CL Model in 1990, CH and CL vehicles with the high-level interior trim package utilized the gold ornaments.Starting in 2007, the gold ornament indicated that a vehicle had an all-Mack powertrain, i.e., Mack engine, Mack transmission, and Mack axles. Popular Post 39 Baby Mack Posted January 8, 2015 Popular Post Share Posted January 8, 2015 On a further note,All the older dogs are supposed to be duplicates of the soap carving made by Alfred Fellows Masury in 1932.If you look closely at these dogs you will notice that they are not symmetrical.This leads one to believe that the soap carving story is true which I believe it is.If you look straight into his face you will notice that his R.H. eye is higher than his left, turn him around, look at his back hips his right one is cut down lower than his left.Look at him from both sides, notice the flat spots in the middle of the legs on both sides, wide on the right, narrow on the left. His mid section narrow in front wide in the back on the left, just the opposite on the right.Needless to say he's crooked as a copy of the carving would be.As Don stated above they changed the ears and tail in 1979.I like the way he put it, to make it more friendly.The rest of the dog stayed the same, crooked as it should be.Sometime later I was surprised and disgusted to find out that they changed it altogether and that he was no longer crooked but was indeed symmetrical.I don't know exactly when they did this but I first noticed it in the early 90's.Go look at a new one, he is indeed symmetrical.I have no idea why in the world they would do this, but the thought of some young buck noticing it was crooked and thought that it was terrible that their corporate symbol was like that comes to mind!I think before changing it they should've found out why he was the way he was and left well enough alone.It's funny, but at about the same time I found this out the Mack Co. was running an ad in the truck magazines about the "Bulldog"Wish I had one to show, but I don't, maybe someone else on here can find one.The ad had a Bulldog hood ornament superimposed over the Declaration of Independence and the tag line went something like this Yeah it's just a hood ornament like the Declaration of Independence is just a piece of paper!After seeing that I thought to myself well you guys have made it just a hood ornament!They had taken all the history out of the "Bulldog"I'm sure Mr. Masury would not be pleased!Ron 6 Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Seems like I am constantly having an argument with somebody or another about what the gold dogs meant! Funny thing is, they are usually ALL right...depending on the age of the truck.I'm old, so gold dogs meant Maxidyne power.All that newer stuff is for you younger whipper-snappers!!!
