Here is an RS700 that was at Macungie a few years back.Kind of a unique unit (although a certain FWD owner would disagree!). The 2 guys millin' around the truck,drooling are none other than macknutt & the late Skippy Blizzard. I never knew you can fit that leaker in thereThey were different than the regular Western 700's in that not only did they have the long hood,the cowl was also extended. There were 3 RL771's built,from 1970 to 1972 and 7 RS771's built from 1970 to 1973. The ol' boy that drove it said, "yeah I wear ear plugs, but I can do 72mph uphill, downhill, loaded, or empty". And that was with 154,000lb MI trains. If you kept that motor @ 18-2100 you could run with or pass just about any think! And let me say this, yes we put oil in the motor an maybe more than a Cat or Cummins, but on a Jersey night like tonight with a good set of battery's it will start!! It was eventually wrecked and totaled in the crash. But they would go- A man from Buckingham had one in a cabover Peterbilt and had it leased to H.H.Moore Trucking. He pulled chips from Dillwyn to Covington with it, and i'd see his driver hook to a load of chips at the wood yard and take off down rt.15 and I remember thinking that I couldn't take off that fast bobtailing. I was driving an International with a VT903 at the time.Johnny Harris had a V12 Fmodel too. He told me the story of when he stopped at the truckstop in Berkley Springs, W.V. one night and got to talking with a couple of "large car" drivers. They were all going to the same area and decided to run across the turnpike together. When they went outside to leave one of the other drivers asked Johnny what he was driving. He pointed at the F model, with a load of green lumber behind it. So they asked him if he minded if they pulled out first so he wouldn't hold them up, because they were in a hurry.He said "not at all, go ahead". You had about 6 or 8 miles of 2 lane to run before you got to I-70. The other guys pulled out, Johnny followed them up rt.522 to 70, and the first big hill you get to he pulled into the left lane and smoked them both. He said by the time he got to the top of Town Hill Mountain he couldn't even hear them on the radio.And "Hard Rock" told me one time that they had several trucks hauling chips from Rupert,W.V. to Covington, from the yard Burns hauls from. He said it got so cold up there one night that every single truck except one froze up and cut off during the night, even with them idled up. I met Mark about 15 years ago at Macungie when I wondered up to visit with him about his Mack. WE have been good friends ever since and evey time I go to Macungie we split the room. Mark is one of the most interesting and funny characters you would ever meet. Once he gets started with the stories they are one after another and your sides will be hurting! One saying of his I remember is " Life is like a shit sandwich. The more bread you got the less shit you gotta eat" He is a retired union Cement mixer driver. That Mack of his has at least 44000# rears and beats him up pretty bad and as he has gottin older he prefers to take a old Ford pickup to enter in the shows. If ever you are at a show and see a man walking around with a white towel around his neck, that is Mark. Wayne Otis would know how to get ahold of him. When I see him again I will get some info and pics. Sorry FWD I'm a lifetime Mack guy but a Detroit is a Detroit. felicello122 Posted February 14, 2015 Share Posted February 14, 2015 Kingston is 20 minutes from me and i never knew this bad dog was so close, they may leak oil but nothing sounds as good as a 12 banger, especially if it is tuned right and has a nice exhaust system in place, i would love to have this unique piece of history!
