With the snow FINALLY melting, like many I was out starting her up and poking around under the hood. I have never found an ID on this engine, can't find a plate near the inj pump, rocker covers or ? I don't even know much about it (I've been around mostly Macks with pedigree drivetrains or Scania's in the 400's). The guy who put it in the truck said it was a motor used in off-road equipment. If I remember it correctly most Cummins I've seen were light green. Any info?

Looks like a small cam 855, probably a 350. On the left side of engine at rear,just below top of block is a serial number. A Cummins dealer can run the number and tell you for sure. Most of these were tan, the green ones were Detroits.When International used them they were all red.It has an intercooler so I think it must be at least a 350, the cast alum valve covers make me think it must be a small cam. They used stamped steel by the time the Big Cams came about. Steve

Found it. Thanks theakerstwo - it was there, block has very little oil or grease, but a coating of fine dirt (I'll wash it this spring). Didnt see the numbers but rubbed with a rag and there they were Again, without knowing where to look probably wouldnt have found til I washed it - thanks again.

I forgot but I can not copy and paste on this site.But it is a NTC 290 in its first life.Made july 28 1973 but a 290 did not have a after cooler so it means the engine you have is a mixed matched of parts.

You must be using WIN8 w/IE11.

TWO STROKES ARE FOR GARDEN TOOLS

Glenn's like a Cummins savant! Hey, to change the subject I think the starters bad. During the fall, it seemed to be fine but every once in a while just the solenoid (or relay?) clunks. Try it a bunch and then suddenly it's good for many more starts. Doing it again now. So I looked at it. It's a Delco Remy MT41. PN 10478897. Now the Remy site says it is obsolete and replaced by an MT42 (and actually says the MT41 is for up to 600 cu in, not my 855?). Now I found a 12V MT 41 model number 10478812 and the Remy site says that is still a good part. So I guess all MT41 CW rotation, 12V I starters are not the same? Should I get mine rebuilt or? Any ideas? Another riddle, sorry!
