"OPERTUNITY IS MISSED BY MOST PEOPLE BECAUSE IT IS DRESSED IN OVERALLS AND LOOKS LIKE WORK"  Thomas Edison

“Life’s journey is not to arrive at the grave safely, in a well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, totally worn out, shouting ‘Holy shit, what a ride!’

Neat read, still lots and lots of stuff in the oilfield over here that's powered by ol' jimmys. In fact there are two diesel shops that specialize in old two strokes since they are still common around here.

The problems we face today exist because the people who work for a living are outnumbered by the people who vote for a living.

The government can only "give" someone what they first take from another.

Green Dash ..... was that a typo? "toil" ? ......or did you meen endless OIL!!!!!!!!

Hmm...I guess oil does rhyme with oil.

"A 2 cycle engine? Just like our mower?

What shade of green is that? And what is a blower?"

But some think it would best serve as an anchor for a boater."

You Cat and Cummins guys can keep doin rod and main rolls, and I'll just keep puttin oil in my jimmy's

I never drove one but have been around them a bit. I love the sound of a 12V detroit. I think it is music...Love a Mack V8 too...I believe they worked well, particularly in the marine applications for which they were designed.

Love all the old pictures and advertisements. Things sure were different 60 years ago.

Me too....I mean me neither...I mean "I agree!" I was watching "Alaska Bush People" the other day, and the Brown's new boat has an 8V-71 in it.

Producer of poorly photo-chopped pictures since 1999.

Ah the Good ole Jimmy Diesel The one diesel engine that converted diesel fuel into noise .

& the reason why i am half assed Hard of hearing now ..

You could often hear me say this @ home after being around the 74' GMC 9500 S/A Lowboy tractor or the burner(which had a 353 Jimmy) feeding a burn pit on a clearing job most of the day (@The dinner table @ home) WHAT DID YOU SAY ?? I STILL HEAR THAT 238 & 353 SCREAMING IN MY EARS!!! ;)

For the U.S.Navy from the 1-71 up to the 16-278A they certainly helped the War effort. Most of the small boats and Landing Craft were powered by the 71 Series General Motors Diesel ,Diesel Subs, Sub Chasers,Destroyer Escorts,Tugs Patrol Craft were the main propulsion for a lot of these ships and auxiliary generators on aircraft Carriers. They certainly moved a lot of freight.Powered heavy equipment, generators and the list goes on. On a lighter note they kept the Kitty Litter and oil supply jobbers in business. Joe D.

My dad had 2 timberjack skidders with detroits in them. One had 353 the other had a 453 in it. Lots of fond memories of sitting on his lap with ear muffs over ear plugs to help with the noise.

Between the two, rather have the 71. The 53 series with the higher rpm range is just awful to hear.

We had a couple of 671/238 in trucks had 353, 453 & 471 in equipment & a 8V71/318 In a truck . & ya after listening to both series on a daily basis for years i prefer a 71 . less of a squeal than the 53 series .
