Finally, a picture of a proper Commonwealth truck.

Now, how about some of Fodens, ERFs and Seddon Atkinsons? They should be broken in just about now.

A Scammell or Bedford TM would be acceptable as well.

I recall an ERF-built Western Star COE running down there too.

Ohhhhh....

where's my pills..!!!!

the last one is interesting for me, the UK construction and uses regulations for petrol tankers (PetRegs) for that time required the exhaust to be placed under the front bumper, seems the Oz regs allowed for a spark arrester on the stackpipe... the rear window glass had to be armored with wire in the laminate and the back of the cab had to be metaled down to the bottom of the mudflap height.... and no sleeper allowed.

Tim...

you are going to find a lot of uk built or kitted "lorries" on NZ farms... we traded NZ lamb and butter for british rust until the EU/EEC came along... however, they do seem to have many tidy survivors.

probably at that time IH owned Sed/Ak hence the photos

Yep defiantly when IH Australia took over Atkinson BC Mack I have read what the connection was between Seddon and Atkinson but cant remember what it was

Atkinson Australia had to start selling them they never sold any good as they weren't suited to Australian road laws with out a lot of modification

UK sold more trucks tractors and cars in Australia than all other brands put together I reckon till EU/EEC debarkle happened and they left Australia high and dry then as it turned out didnt work any good for UK either

Atkinson formed in 1907 as a steam engine repair company, by 1916 were manufacturing their own steam wagons but went bankrupt in 1930 and was reformed with a new owner to produce trucks which it did by 1935, the Big A logo was introduced at this time. Seddon bought Atkinson in late 1970 for 4.8 million Pounds, Leyland had held a 20% stake in Atkinson and swayed the lesser takeover bids from ERF and Foden to Seddon....

IH bought 'Seddon Atkinson' in 1974 which though some acquisitions came under Pegaso of Spain and then rolled into Iveco..

production ended in about 2004 and the marque disappeared a couple of years later... so, nearly 100 years..!!!

There are over 240 pages of Aussie trucks and other information here:

And another 40 pages of Pommy (British) trucks here:

Some interesting reading, drag out a case of VB and enjoy yourself

Tim, here is the beautiful Western Star-branded model 7564 COE which was produced by UK truckmaker ERF. Nice truck. Quite a few were sold in New Zealand such as this stunning Mainfreight unit. It was based on the ERF model EC and featured the company's signature fiberglass panel-over-steel frame cab architecture.

ERF had been taken over by Canada (British Columbia) based Western Star in 1996. MAN bought ERF in March 2000, and Daimler-Chrysler acquired Western Star in August 2000.
