Anyone know how many hours it takes to install a clutch on a 98 DM with a Mack 13 speed? I have my truck at a local truck repair shop and it's going on 24 hours this mechanic has been working on it. At first they said it could be done in 16 hours and I'd only be down for one day. They are open 24 hours but only have one night guy working on it. They told me to drop it off after work on Monday, they could pull it out that night, have it back together the next night, and I'd only be down one day. Now it's going on the 4th night and they said it still might not be done for Friday morning. I'm just trying to see if I'm getting bent over or not.

Probably got the mechanic running all over doing "rush" jobs.

They may be pulling your mechanic to do other jobs and quick easy money jobs since they have a night guy on it and they figure you are in bed at home and won't know. Might ought to check in on them tonight, and check for legs sticking out from under your truck. A simple clutch job with flywheel grind and rear main might take some folks a solid couple of nights but a whole work week is a bit much.

Are they charging on book time or actual hours, if the latter I would be camping out there to make sure they are not screwing you around.

Seen it all to often and the manager forgets that it takes time when you get back to the original job to remember where exactly you were on it.

I just talked to them this morning and apparently it's the shop's night foreman who is on the job. He told this morning that he has to take care of everyone else in the shop and finish my truck at the same time. I called my local dealer and he gave me a estimate of 18 hours to swap out the clutch. I should have went there in the first place. The shop manager told me the bill was around $3400.00 right now. Outrageous. My truck is supposed to be ready Monday morning now. I'm out 4 days of work plus the bill.

So what I was told originally was that it would done in 2 nights, I'd be only down one day, and the estimate was at $2000.00. Now, I'm out 4 days and the bill is at $3400.00.

I've been going to this shop for several years and this is the first time they really tried messing with me but now others have been telling me they had problems in the past too.

Any ideas what I should do here?

16 hours to do the job. Maybe 20 hours if you have 2 PTOs, mounts that were difficult to get out, or other problems. $3400 seems high, whats their labor rate?

The fact that the foreman is doing the work could be a sign they ran all the good mechs out and are going down hill.

I could see it sitting an extra day if you need to get the flywheel turned

With the Mechanic doing it at night it still could be 2 days. pull it at night, machine shop in the day and install 2nd night. They seem to be taking advantage of him IMO. Paul
