Just bought this Granite single axle CV713 with an AI 350 and sometimes it cranks for 5 seconds or more! Sometimes it fires up on the first turn over and sounds great? Put air in the tank to check for any fuel leaks and nothing? This truck was a PA Turnpike plow truck so it has a fuel heater and I checked that, no leaks? The glass fuel filter on the fire wall is new and only filled about one third the way up, should it be higher?

Again, it's not all the time and not always the first start up of the day, it can be as soon as 5 minutes after running for an hour? Has me stumped!

Added on edit: the truck has 98,000 miles and 7,000 hours.

Not all fuel prime loss will result in an external leak. Most would just leak/flow back to the tank.

1/3 of the way full with the clear bowl is fine. An 1" or more is good. As the filter gets dirty the level goes up, when its towards the top it suppose to be replaced. Make sure the plastic screw cap on top of the clear bowl (fuel filter) has an oring.

Does it have 2 spin on fuel filters? Or 1 spin on and a Davco clear bowl filter set up? The Davco has a check valve in it that goes bad.

All I can see are the Davco 382 filter, no spin on unless it's near the tank, I haven't looked there or under the frame yet.

That's what I thought, filled up as it got dirty. I'll check for the o ring but the filter seems tight and no visible leaks, dry.

engine has 2 timing sensors one in the front on passenger side,,, will not start at all if that one is bad, and one under the starter in the flywheel housing, will start but hard if it is bad or has "green wires" bad connection etc....

Thank you, makes sense, this truck saw a lot of salt!

Truck goes in on Tuesday for the Clutch, I'm going to have them check the check valve and fuel heater for leaks.

The truck actually started right up this morning in like a crank and a half! What the hell! Then, shut it down 3 hours later and start up and a huge long crank to fire, and when it does, it's perfect!

A friend of mine told me today his Mack (1998 CH Dump) has a wait period similar to glow plugs on his truck and the truck will not fire up quickly if you don't wait for the diagnostic lights to go out, I just tried this and it started real quick after waiting for the lights to go out. I feel like a Homer Simpson moment and: Doh....!

Has anyone else had this expearience?
