Most of you around here are aware of my dislike for V*lv* and what they've done to Mack.

So what kind of machine did I have to move today?

The machine belongs to a small local excavating co. which does not have it's own trailer, therefore we usually move it for them about once a week.

Lately I've been the one assigned to the task.

Ironic, eh???

There is a Volvo construction equipment servicing dealer in E. Peoria. They are always busy. Wonder why?? They don't make near the excavator that Cat does from a durability standpoint.

Shoud be profitable moving their machinery. Requires a lot of shop time.

I dunno any more. I have had 3 Cat loaders in the past 6 years, with a combined 26,000 hours on them. The first one was the best, we ran nearly 13,000 hours on it with little problems. and the quality and serviceability has gone down significantly since then, and I just signed off to trade out the 7,000 hour machine, and I had to go with a Volvo. The Cat "system" has deteriorated significantly. They are just not as serviceable anymore, and they require more servicing. The dealer support is not getting any better either. I'm not sure that the Volvo will be much better, but I have quite a few friends that have gotten great lives out of the Volvo loader, and they burn less fuel to boot. I will know more in a few months I suppose, as I have yet to take delivery, but I'm optimistic for now.

Hi Bolt, I can't answer for loaders but at the airport that I'm based out of there are three loaders: One is a newer 928F Cat, a 644 John Deere, and a 444 John Deere. The Deere products have required much more maintenanance through their lifespan than most of the Caterpillar equipment. That is not saying it hasn't changed in recent times as I don't work on them.

I just know that the Volvo salesman that went to Case told me that the Volvo excavators "needed improvement" without details. Why he left, I don't know.

Yeah, there are always allot of variables, and I'm not well versed in most of the other Volvo lines. We've had three 924G's, and the new ones are H's already. I looked long and hard at the Deeres, 544J, and the new K series, but decided against them, but it was a tough decision.
