Not sure what operating procedure or willingness to risk an officers life is in Australia, but in the USA if a knife wielding car bomber comes running at a police officer, knife raised, the officer will go for the lead pills and skip the 30 second dodge-n-dance? Then again a brown banana has gotten a lot of people killed here.

Strasbourg shooting: Gunman shouted 'Allahu Akbar' as he attacked

BBC  /  December 11, 2018

The Strasbourg gunman yelled "Allahu Akbar" ("God is greatest" in Arabic) as he opened fire on people enjoying an evening out at a Christmas market, the Paris public prosecutor told reporters.

Rémy Heitz said two people had been killed and one left brain-dead after the attack in the eastern French city on Tuesday.

Twelve were wounded, six seriously.

The man, named Chérif Chekatt, was known to authorities as having been radicalised in prison.

The 29-year-old was armed with a gun and a knife and escaped the area in a taxi.

The attacker boasted to the driver - who has spoken to police - that he had killed 10 people, and said he had been injured in a firefight with soldiers.

Four people connected to the suspect had been detained overnight in Strasbourg.

Hundreds of officers are currently involved in the search for the gunman. France's Deputy Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez earlier acknowledged he may no longer be in France.

Interior Minister Christophe Castaner said the country had moved to a high level of alert, expanding police powers and increasing vigilance.

He added that border controls had been strengthened and security at all Christmas markets would be stepped up.

What happened?

The attack unfolded at around 20:00 local time (19:00 GMT) on Tuesday close to Strasbourg's famed Christmas market near one of the central squares, Place Kléber, which attracts thousands of visitors at this time of year.

A woman named Audrey told France's BFM TV how she came face to face with the killer after watching him shoot a man in the head.

The gunman then opened fire for a second time, and another man fell to ground.

Her friends began to run to safety, but Audrey was frozen to the spot. The gunman turned, and faced her - but then he too ran.

"Why didn't he shoot at me? I don't know. I think I was extremely lucky. As everyone was screaming he fled."

As the attacker fled, he came into contact with four soldiers. He began firing at them, and they fired back.

How did he escape?

He managed to reach a taxi which drove him away from the scene and dropped him in the vicinity of the police station in Neudorf, the area where he lives which sits on the border between Germany and France.

When he got out the vehicle, he fired at police officers.

According to police - who refer to the gunman as Chérif C - the gunman was born in Strasbourg and was already known to the security services as a possible terrorist threat.

He was the subject of a "fiche S", a watchlist of people who represent a potential threat to national security.

He also had 27 convictions spanning across France, Germany and Switzerland, and has spent considerable time in prison as a result.

Five Minnesota men accused of accused of trying to fly overseas to fight with ISIS are now charged with a new count of conspiracy to commit murder outside the United States.

Prosecutors say the men are part of a group of friends in Minnesota’s Somali community who recruited and inspired each other to join ISIS.

Three members of the group have pleaded guilty, but the rest — Hamza Naj Ahmed, 20; Mohamed Abdihamid Farah, 21; Adnan Abdihamid Farah, 19; Abdurahman Yasin Daud, 21; and Guled Ali Omar, 21 — are scheduled to stand trial in February.

Some of the men began talking about fighting with the Islamic State group as early as March 2014.

As part of their planning, some of the men communicated with ISIS members overseas, some supplied an informant with materials for fake passports and some played paintball to prepare for combat.

The 14-count indictment charges all five men with conspiracy to commit murder outside the U.S. and conspiracy to provide material support to a foreign terrorist organization.

It also charges all but Adnan Farah with attempting to provide such support.

Some of the new charges include perjury counts against Adnan Farah, Mohamed Farah and Daud for allegedly lying to the federal grand jury.

Some members of the group provided others with telephone numbers they could use in Turkey to contact members of ISIS.

Daud and Adnan Farah used social media to communicate with a self-described ISIS member in Syria who gave them information about the best way to travel to join the fighting.

On April 19, Daud and Mohamed Farah received fake passports from an undercover FBI employee in San Diego, California. They were both arrested that day in San Diego, while most of the other members of the group were arrested in Minnesota.

Congressional freshman Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., once asked a judge to show leniency toward a group of Minnesota men accused of trying to join the Islamic State terror group.

“The best deterrent to fanaticism is a system of compassion," she wrote at the time. "We must alter our attitude and approach; if we truly want to effect change, we should refocus our efforts on inclusion and rehabilitation."

The nine Minnesota men were facing decades in prison after being accused in 2015 of making plans, including buying fake passports, in an effort to travel to Syria and fight for ISIS, which was at its peak level of activity and held territory in Syria and Iraq.

Omar, who was then a Minnesota state representative, was part of a group that sent letters to Judge Michael Davis urging him to give shorter sentences, arguing that harsher penalties would only lead to more people joining the terror group.

“Incarcerating 20-year-old men for 30 or 40 years is essentially a life sentence. Society will have no expectations of the to-be 50- or 60-year-old released prisoners; it will view them with distrust and revulsion,” read Omar’s letter to the judge.

“Such punitive measures not only lack efficacy, they inevitably create an environment in which extremism can flourish, aligning with the presupposition of terrorist recruitment,” she added.

Omar’s letter seeking more lenient sentences resurfaced on social media amid criticism over her attack on Sen. Lindsey Graham, Covington Catholic High School students, and the endorsement of socialist Venezuelan dictatorship.

One of the men in particular, Abdirahman Yasin Daud, was facing over 30 years in prison for trying to join the terrorist group. He admitted in court that he wasn’t trying to enter Syria on humanitarian grounds, but rather to participate in the activities of ISIS.

“I was not going there to pass out medical kits or food. I was going strictly to fight and kill on behalf of the Islamic State,” he said.

But Omar told the judge that the best way counter extremism was with empathy rather than punishment.

“A long-term prison sentence for one who chose violence to combat direct marginalization is a statement that our justice system misunderstands the guilty. A restorative approach to justice assesses the lure of criminality and addresses it.”

Almost all the men on trial received lengthy sentences, with Daud serving 30 years in prison after he was found guilty of trying to provide material support to ISIS and conspiring to commit murder overseas.

You do need to admit she is entertaining and the Millennials, Gen Y and Z  people love her.

You watch she'll be in the White House in 6 years as Madam President.

Saudi killer in U.S. Navy base attack hated Americans

Reuters  /  December 7, 2019

PENSACOLA, Fla. (Reuters) - The Saudi airman training at Naval Air Station Pensacola who killed three people there posted criticism of U.S. wars and quoted slain al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden on social media hours before the shooting spree.

A sheriff’s deputy fatally shot the gunman, ending the second deadly attack at a U.S. military base within a week.

The murderer was a member of the Royal Saudi Air Force who was on the base as part of a U.S. Navy training program designed to foster links with foreign allies.

The shooter has been named as Second Lieutenant Mohammed Saeed Alshamrani.

At least three of the eight people wounded were law enforcement shot as they responded to the attack, including one Navy police officer and two county sheriff’s deputies.

Six other Saudi nationals are being questioned by investigators in Florida, three of whom were seen filming the incident, the New York Times reported.

An uncle of Alshamrani, Saad bin Hantim Alshamrani, said his nephew was 21, and “likable and mannered towards his family and the community.” He said his nephew “has his religion, his prayer, his honesty and commitments.”

The younger Alshamrani posted a justification of his planned attack in English on Twitter a few hours before it began.

He referred to U.S. wars in the Middle East, writing that he hated the American people for “committing crimes not only against Muslims but also humanity,” and criticizing Washington’s support for Israel. He also quoted bin Laden, the Saudi mastermind of the attacks on the United States on Sept. 11, 2001.

Reuters  /  December 10, 2019

The Pentagon announced on Tuesday it was halting operational training of all Saudi Arabian military personnel in the United States until further notice.

The decision will have far-reaching impacts on visiting Saudi personnel, including grounding more than 300 Saudi Arabian military aviation students.

The Pentagon added the move would also affect infantry personnel and all other Saudi training, other than classroom training.

The safety standdown only applies to the 850 visiting students from Saudi Arabia. A defense official said the shooting “suggested that there could be a particular improvement with that(nation’s population.”

The U.S. Air Force said its groundings of Saudi aviation students also applied to additional U.S. bases.

“We feel it is best to keep the Royal Saudi Air Force students off the flying schedule,” an Air Force spokeswoman said.

Wall Street Journal  /  December 10, 2019

Exceptions under federal firearms law allowed the murderer in the attack at Naval Air Station Pensacola to legally buy a handgun in the U.S. despite his Saudi citizenship.

Mohammed Alshamrani was able to buy the 9mm Glock 45 because he had obtained a state hunting license, which is one of the exceptions to a law that normally prohibits people admitted to the U.S. under a nonimmigrant visa from possessing or owning a firearm, the Federal Bureau of Investigation office in Jacksonville, Florida, said Tuesday.

State officials in Florida are "now" calling such exceptions “loopholes” that must be closed to help prevent similar incidents in the future.

Alshamrani killed three people Friday in the attack at NAS Pensacola before he was shot dead by a local sheriff’s deputy.

Maybe if we vetted any of the foreign personnel coming to learn instead of pencil whipping them on the word of their government this wouldn't happen.

How about having Saudi government foot 11 million dollars bond per individual trainee. If the individual commits a felony stateside that money never goes home. It’s a start?

If the next idiot shoots/wounds 15 people then the individual bond allotment becomes a flat rate of $15,000,000.00 bond per Idiot.

Twenty-one Saudi servicemen training at US military installations will be expelled from the United States after a review that followed the deadly shooting last month at a Naval Air Station in Pensacola, Florida.

The Saudis are not accused of aiding the 21-year-old Saudi Air Force second lieutenant who killed three American sailors in the December shooting, but some have connections to extremist movements.

Seventeen of the expelled cadets were found to have possessed online terrorist material.

Fifteen, including some of the 17 who possessed online terrorist material, had images of child pornography.
