My delco switch crapped out on my truck last time I tried to start it. Does anyone have a direct fit 12 volt starter part number for my ENDT673? Are there any other changes that I need to make if I convert the starter to 12v? I've heard it's easier to convert to 12v rather than find a delco switch to replace mine with.

A 42MT or 39MT starter should work. Be sure it is a 11 tooth. I used a 42 MT it fit but was close to every thing and had to bend the vent pipe slightly. A 39 might have worked better. The starter shop where I got mine had both. They said the 39 was a gear reduction and had more torque and the 42 would spin faster. With a used engine I did not think torque was an issue. They also gave me a solenoid to mount on the firewall to be sure there was ample voltage to the starter solenoid. There was a post on this dated 14 Nov 2014 which has a lot of good information. The electrical part is straight forward. Just by pass the series parallel stuff in short.

Thanks for the info guys. With parts stores being 60+ miles from me and my Mack 3.5 hrs away I want to be sure and get the right parts the first time before I head over the mountains to work on it.

40MT 12 volt starter. I used the upper solenoid of the 12-14 switch to engage the starter.

So I can use my existing delco switch, but just the upper 12v solenoid even though the 24v switch crapped out? Thanks again for the help.

Not sure what the Delco switch is. Is this the series parallel switch/solenoid ? If your starter is good Watt's has them for $150. My starter was bad so I just went to a 12 volt starter.

Yes the parallel switch. It's not much more for a 12v starter. Found one for $167+ free shipping. So I'm leaning towards going 12 volt.

As far as I realized a series parallel switch has two groups of contacts.

Those ones it connects to make 24 volts are heavy ones.

The other pair are smaller and designed to hold a battery charge current only.

So as I figured out the said above you can use the big set of contacts in relay to switch on your starter. As just a switch, no series function.

The other set of contacts shows no need.

With the modern battery technology the 24 volt system is not really needed. A cheapo 12 Volt battery has more CCA and reserve than what the truck originally came with. Paul

Good to know. So converting to a 12 volt starter will save me from having to buy 2 batteries as well.

One more question about the starter. One of the 12volt starters is clockwise only and the other can be bought to turn in either direction so I assume I want an 11 tooth clockwise turning starter.
