Your Thoughts?

I know there are a bunch of “Purists” on this site that would like to see an old Mack truck brought back to original condition. I may rock a few boats here but I think it is worth the debate. I am in the process of restoring a 1965 B61SX with a END 711 and quadraplex tranny. I have been going to truck shows for some years now and I have done my share of drooling over the projects you all kick out of your shops. I could never hope to match the quality restorations that I see at those shows so when I started my truck project, I decided to deviate a bit and build my truck so it is pleasing to me. At most shows I have been to, you can see dozens of old Macks that are green or red on the exterior and Mack interior green on the interior. Most look as though they just came off the factory line. I, on the other hand, have taken the liberty of painting the exterior of my truck a light gray and have matched that color for the interior. My fenders and grill will be Jet black while the nose piece will be the lt. gray. I installed a headliner and rear cab wall out of sheet PVC and have covered both with a smoke gray carpet-like fabric. Most diesel engines I see look as though the manufacturer built up the entire engine with all attachments and then just spray painted everything the same color. I decided I would paint my engine with an array of colors that would make it POP a bit. So, in a nutshell, I am cleaning, refurbishing, and remounting original parts on the truck but have seriously deviated from the normal Mack color schemes. That truck looks great its your money you make it the way YOU want it in the end it has to make you happy period. I modify everything I buy to make it the way I want it Im the only one who is putting the money and time into the project. If you drive it down the road and it makes you happy to be seen in it that's all that matters in the long run now I can jump down off my soap box. I have been modifying trucks, military vehicles and classic cars and heard it all both the criticism and compliments so just remember you cant please everybody so aim to please yourself.

I am a purist for the most part but I like what you are doing. I would say your work looks top notch from what I can see. I really like the details on the engine, looks great. Keep up the good work!

Dont listen to the purists, it your truck and you have the right do do what you want. If you look at the truck in my avitar you will see a brockway with rectangular head lights from a superliner, brockways never had these lights but it wanted to be able to see at night and a different look, it was my truck and i did what i wanted to do. And you can do the same.

That's actually the color scheme I'd do being I have a black and gray Ford F-250 and Dark Shadow Grey 04 mach1 mustang

Excellent work. I really like what I see. Nice touch with the fuel filter water separator looks like one from a cat . Anytime you clean one up and paint it you have saved something for the future. What did you use for paint on the frame rails ?

I do most of the work on parts in my shop and them bring them outside to mount on the truck that is in a large carport-like structure. It is cold work this time of year but sometimes you just have to suck it up. As for the paint I am using on the frame, I have added a hardner to Rustolium and I am spraying it on. Seems to go on well and is fairly rugged for a decent price.

Should hold up pretty well. That's what some guys I know use on there working trucks around here. They redo the back half of the frame every few years so should last a long time on a toy. That's what I have to use on mine as well.

That engine color is Plasticoat Alpine Green 500 degree engine paint. I was told that it most closely matches the Mack original color without having it professionally mixed. Buy the way...All those Aeroquip lines are expensive! Great product and they look awesome...but lots of coin.

im a purist and I like it. was one at Springfield Mass national show that was a B613sx , was gray and white,with a hood scoop and a 300+ in it. I cannot find my picture of it for the life of me

WTF? When the hell did Mack have alpine puke effing green as an OEM color? I have never seen one before that I can recall? This is so completely, totally and wholly UNACCEPTABLE! I WANT SOMEONE'S HEAD FOR THIS! THIS IS UN-EXCUSABLE!!! I'm going to go beat the crap out of something now for this.........

Your truck looks great with the work you have shown. It is your truck you are the one who drives it and enjoys it and are adding your personality to it and that is great. The fact you took the time to go to the lengths you have gone to is to be appreciated by others who have restored trucks here and in a way we all add our touch to them. My B-61 has the same color inside because ( sorry to purists) I hated that green, the rest of the interior is correct as is the rest of the truck.

the interior color doesn't bother me as much as long as its not RED. god do I hate when someone paints the interior of a B model red haha. I have thought about painting one beige someday inside myself. have seen a few nice ones.
