Mack fleet boasts improved fuel economy

Prime Mover Magazine  /  March 3, 2016

Queensland-based refrigeration specialist S&G Transport has reported fuel economy improvements from running a fleet of Mack Super-Liners and Tridents.

“We were running another brand of trucks all equipped with EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) emission control technology and we were only getting 1.3 to 1.4 km/L out of them,” said Managing Director, Glen Rollinson.

S&G bought a Mack Trident with a 535hp MP8 engine with mDRIVE automated manual transmission in 2013, followed by five more Tridents and 21 Mack Super-Liners.

“We were looking to get our mileage back to the levels we had before emissions controls were introduced and the figures the Macks were getting looked pretty good,” said Vayanos.

“The SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) engines in the Macks give us the fuel economy we were after,” said Rollinson.

“On a bad day we’re getting 1.7 km/L, and on a good day we’ll get 1.9 km/L on the B-doubles and 2-2.5km/L on the singles. There’s no question the Macks have made a big difference.”

“That’s a significant saving per truck and our trucks are averaging 5,000 km a week, so it has a direct effect on the bottom line, even with fuel down to around a dollar a litre.” said Vayanos.

S&G transport also uses Mack’s telematics system to track the trucks’ fuel consumption and driver technique.

“Mack Telematics is a brilliant tool because it gives us real-time feedback on things like fuel consumption, idle time, whether the truck is in performance mode, whether the driver’s using the mDRIVE or changing gears manually,” said Rollinson,

“By reviewing and comparing all of that information we can get a clear picture of how individual driving behaviours affect fuel consumption.”

According to Mack, the trucks have achieved Rollinson and Vayanos’ fuel consumption goal.

“There’s no question these fuel figures are good,” said Rollinson.

“The Macks have put us where we wanted to be, which is back to the sort of fuel consumption we had before emission controls came in. That’s a win in anyone’s language.”
