Both my B71 and Superliner are not "Pure Breeds" , they are Cummins powered..... I have seen a lot of R's that I believed were ALL Mack but they had a chrome dog. What makes a GOLD dog?    I have seen R's in Pa. to Ca. So the other R model question, what is the difference in a western R model?

R models were actually among the first to have gold dogs, the gold dog meant it had a Maxidyne engine, which were painted gold. The rest of the powertrain didn't matter, in '79 the EPA had issues with the gold paint and a few years later, with the introduction of the Econodyne engine, the gold dog was discontinued.Since the true R model was discontinued in 1990,the later ones all had chrome dogs.

A true Western R model was built in Hayward , CA. They had alot more aluminum components, and were offered with more engine options,Hayward closed in '81.

Thanks so much Superdog!  I have wondered about this for years.  I keep wanting to put a gold dog on our RW because it is all mack, but my son won't let me.  Now I know he is right and I won't bug him anymore.  We had gold dogs on our F models in the 70's and I always thought it was because they were Mack, bumper to mud flap.
