Sorry about your luck. In other news Mack just in the last month announced 2v remack engines and heads and no longer available. The heads were made unavailable last summer and now the complete engines. Quality is down across the board on just about every brand. I've seen muzzle loader cylinder kits that's suppose to be drop in ready have all the ring gaps in a line.....aleast they are working with you. Shouldn't it be under warranty since it's a remack?

Have they done an autopsy on it Mike? What was the cause?

 

Does Mack still do the rebuilding? Companies farm out almost everything these days, and I think it is common to have another company do the rebuilding.

This is the reason I find a old older Mack in good shape I buy it then figure what to do with it just bought a77- DM-685 with 283 hp 6- speed  no air lines cab in perfect shape and frame frog leg new rear springs  new tires all the way around and we are painting the cab & nose this wknd so we can put another 500K  with no warranty problemo you brake you fix and we bought a 77-R685 in perfect shape just needs paint on the out side . Back in late 80s we sent a tractor for crack block by dip stick and front rear end housing had been leaking over two months it took them to decide whether or not to change at the time we where thinking at buying another 50+ tractors then somebody woke up needles to say we started to do are own work we did buy the CH-613 s radiators- fuel linkage -ring & pinions -air compressors - paint -minor a few problemo's

Sorry to hear about all the trouble.  Sound like there is a Quality issue at Mack. We all have had something to say about it for years it just sucks that it is hitting so close to home these days. The lack of Quality and caring about a good job is everywhere. Hell my mother still had her Maytag washer for 45 years before she died. I get a new one 5 years ago and next time it needs service it is out on the curb.  Right down to most everything produced now it is NOT built to last as it did just even 20 years ago. Wonder if that is the same train of thought with Mike's engine. It may have been built to last the first time but... the old guy needs to get a new truck every 5 years now... not. It is possible that the quality is not in the parts being used or skilled people now days and not to expect yesterday's quality and care with today's standards. We are old farts living in the past and fading with the Quality we once knew and expected.

I'm not too old fart as I feel myself but I'm far from to accept things as they are now about quality.

I read and hear such stories from many people from different parts of the globe. With some point though. From people who use to think on matters of issues they meet and know a reasons of why things are as they are.

I TOO WONDER how long it will go this way and what those things will be in the nearest future. Our life goes too fast and we might get technical collapse soon or something else.

It's not just corporations, employees and parts. A lot of the problems can be blamed on the materials and manufacturing processes mandated by world wide environmental acts. Environmentally "friendly" alloys and machining processes have a lot effect on parts life and final quality.  I have 80 plus year old AC blocks and crank shafts that because of "old dirty" technology just need  to hone the cylinders and polish the journals. I have pulled down 2 or 3 year old engines that needed to be over bored, rods rebuilt or tossed depending if the are machined or fracture made and cranks cut .005 to .010 ,and that is with modern metallurgy and modern oils. I really think that has a lot to do with most all modern products, not just engines.     Paul

My 1956 B-80-81 no rust on frame at all never been painted !!!! better quality metal no recycled sh&t and better Quality Control but the new trucks has to fail.

Everything has been made of inferior quality components whether for environmental reasons but remember the corporations bottom line comes first so the stockholders and most importantly the CEO make lots of money. The workforce is been stretched very thin someone quits don't replace them just make the others work harder people are getting tired of it and in a lot of instances the lack of quality comes from lack of pride in a job well done. Very few get bonuses anymore just make me more money and quit bitching is the companies attitude now days or the standard line no raises just be happy you have a job people are getting fed up with it.

Stock dividends and the bottom line has been a business practice from the get go.  Employee recognition, bonuses and even a simple "Good Job" opens up all kind of potential ramifications with other employees,  ACLU lawyers, unions and god knows who else. 

With the CNC equipment the person who was loading the deep fryer at MacDonalds in now putting the liners on the line for the robot. There is no pride, work ethic or loyalty on both sides. Schools teach children NOT to take the incentive and think out of the box or do something out of the norm.  Little Johnny can't pour piss out of a boot, with the directions on the bottom but we will make him a teacher so he has self esteem. Why?  Mostly because of the T Ball syndrome. . . every body is equal, everybody wins, don't try to excel it makes the ones who can't "feel bad". You  screw up it's not your fault , it's because society failed you. Here is a few examples.  A middle school girls basket ball team (12 or so years old?) was banned from playing. Why because they were a good team. The parents of the other girls team members complained their children were up set by this teams good abilities at the game.  40 years ago the other teams would have practiced more to become as good. Now get rid of the boat rockers. It is a P.C. no no to take pride in anything you do. Don't raise the bar just bring every one down to the lowest level   My grandson and his buddy stole 3 Chrysler drag racing racing engines from my barn to buy dope the engines total value is $160,000.00. I pressed charges a would not drop them after repeated pleas from son and daughter in law.    The DA told me they need counseling not jail time as it was the dope and not their fault. I told him if he did not prosecute them I'd put the entire deal up on bill boards for all to see.  Told my son and daughter in law it was their fault for talking and not spanking  when the boy was young.  Bottom line the ''poor child'' did jail time and an hour after his release tried to steal a brand new Mustang from Otis Ford. Moved from the County Jail to the State Prison. His parents told me he did that because I sent him to jail instead of understanding the problem.  Off track a bit but that part of the poor quality,poor work ethic we have today.    Paul

Paul, It is never their fault just as you point out and someone else made them this way. This is off the subject of Mike's engine but one that just blows my mind. I have two boys 17 & 18, they had the world by the balls... but not anymore. They suffer from an extreme case of Affluenza, It is a condition that is infecting many of today's youths in epidemic proportions. It is the case of where no work, ethics, respect, morals or nothing less that total self indulgence is the goal. And oh ya someone else has to pay for everything, ask no questions and expect NOTHING in return. 

The best one that the boys told me: We didn't ask to be born or live in your house, in a real nice community... but since we do, dad you need to keep us in that lifestyle image because we live with you. We don't have to work just give us money, school grades are nothing and how cares anyway. We don't know if we want to go to college but if we don't can we get the money you set aside for it? We may want to start a business like you but don't want to learn from you, just give us money. I got issues, with my boys, but just think about it. It is the way this great country is going with the young point of view: I did not asked to be here, but since I am I don't have to work or contribute to society. The government needs to pay for everything. Oh and tax the few that do work and are trying to make a difference.  I was an employer as well as an employee and tried to made a difference from both sides.

For many of us we were expected to do better than our parents and they were proud if we did, financially, educationally and socially to name a few. With the attitude of my boys and others, they are not going to make too much of themselves but I hope....

Thanks for the kind thought but... NO they are not taking care of me now or ever probably. I am not taking care of them anymore without a drastic change in their attitudes!! They can live in the house for a few years but the rest is on them. Hope they figure it out before they start living under a bridge somewhere... 

I worked my ass off 70-80 hours a week for 25-30 years to get ahead. I found satisfaction in making my own way taking the good with the bad and knowing that no one else was going to help me get ahead. They don't have a clue but to beg, sorry demand, for money and once they get a little forget how I am. Well it works both ways from where I come from. They are young men so start acting like one. I did my best to raise them right..but Affluenza is really messing up their brains. I started a little rough in my youth, and did not come from much, but straitened out quick once my brain turned on around age 20-21... so I hope.

Boy, I miss read that post, The dealer should stand behind an engine failure on that Reman and be kissing his ass. Put the repair on the fast track and do a few service and oil changes for free just to check that all is OK.

I hope the dealer and the company does the right thing. I was at Gabrellie this morning and asked my old time parts guy about the Remack engines, he asked me if it was factory  or a dealer Remack. Didn't know there was different versions them.  Paul

The Mack reman engines come with a 2 year unlimited mileage warranty. I would think if the quality was crap then the warranty would be much shorter. I've installed and overhauled more Mack engines than you could shake a stick at and have experienced very few issues with remack products. If we did have a problem then the remack center was all over it to make sure the customer was taken care of. The majority of issues we have seen is when customers use reman products from other sources. I don't think there is a problem with quality control at the Mack reman center. If there was I think we would be seeing a lot more failures.  As far as with the OP, he should not have any problems because it is well within the warranty period, unless the failure was determined to be due to operator error.
