Hi folks, I have an 85 MS200 that I bought cheap ($1800) a couple of years ago and it has served me well (I don't actually use it alot but it also makes for great storage). So the old girl has never been "fast" but lately the direction of the wind determines whether or not I can reach 60 mph (fully loaded of course). So a friend recommended I check the turbo by removing the air intake tube and check for play. Didn't have to, the blades are all chewed up. I'm shocked it runs as well as it does. So now for my question. Any suggestions on sourcing a turbo? The best I could find a new one for is $900. I was hoping to find a used one but I can't find an exact fit. It's a Schwitzer 3lm-363. Original Mack number 310327. Garrett number 465610-0010/0011. Modern number is 166151. Any suggestions on a turbo that may be more common, will bolt right up, and be "close enough"?

Hi again. Yes, Watt's Mack said $1700 and some change plus exchange. What i'm hoping is that there is another turbo in the 3lm family that will bolt right on and work "good enough". Like the 3lm-466. Those things are available a dime a dozen but I worry it'll be too big for my little french poodle (as i've heard the Renault Mack's referred to on this forum). Any thoughts or ideas would be appreciated.

Thanks for giving Watts a try. This is a matter of Volvo overcharging, the folks at Watts have their hands tied.

The Schwitzer option is 7536-X310327, and the Garrett option is 3316-X46561011

Schwitzer is now Borg-Warner, and Garrett is generally sold under the Honeywell name now.

We started out with Garrett and later switched to Schwitzer, so you'll only find the latter as a replacement.

You may have only paid $1800 for the truck, but that doesn't change the fact that items like turbochargers are expensive. You're going to have to accept that, balance it out knowing that you didn't pay much for the truck.

 

 

Hi again. Okay Melett only sells parts and they don't carry the compressor wheel. J H diesel said that all the part numbers I gave him aren't compatible. The x310327 original is a 3lm turbo while the 465610-0011 is a TD-04. The way he explained it they are two completely different housings. As for the accepting of the price of the turbo. No, I have to decide if this truck is worth fixing. I don't know how much i'm willing to put into it but I guarantee it's not the $1700-$1800 the dealert quoted. There comes a time when a truck (or any vehicle) is no longer financially feasible. That time may be now. I'm trying to keep the old French Poodle running but i'm not planning on falling down the rabbit hole. I'm still hoping another more common turbo (maybe available used) will work in this one's place. 

I hear you. I imagined a price around $800 to $1000. Borg-Warner is charging a premium due to low volume, and Volvo has its charge-the-most parts pricing policy.

Years ago, this matter would be oh-so-simple.

Hi again, no the truck is in North Dakota. No turbo shops aNY where near. It is what it is. I'm still checking out my options. If I do fix the truck the shifter is a mess. Each gear is approximately in each slot. Any suggestions on how to fix that?
