What does Australia have against long wheelbase tractors?

Nothing in general. Lots of people still use conventional prime movers. But 85% of our population is on the east coast, between Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane. Between them cities is only a b-double route, and when your limited to 26m that big bonnet is just a luxury. I think it's 2 extra pallet spaces.

And semi trailers must not exceed 19m long.

I drive a COE for the same reason except I'm limited to 36.5m. I can fit 2 and a half trailers where a bonneted truck would only fit 2.

Also, around town, backing into shed or getting into tight spots in a COE is so easy. The turning circle is miles better.
