Why did they shutdown?

As I recall, Mack gave the reasons as shrinking market share and lack of profitability from that plant.  Even that new plant in Winnsboro, SC, did not last long.

There were some tough times going on through those years.

a few reasons.

1 they had inventory issues and shortages. in attempt to keep up with deliveries,Mack was sending half loaded trailers with parts from the mack plant in PA to CA and emptie trailers back to PA just to build the westerns.

2 Mack didnt have a very large market share out west and Pete / KW was fastly gaining in popularity

3 i also heard staffing issues due to the laid back CA culture but who knows

such a loss. east coast was always Mack country in the day. to see a western Mack roll in had all eyes staring. they just had a "Look" beyond the working mack  appearance. remember seeing  my first aluminum frame rails on a western;   " nope it's gonna break " LOL . DM triple steel frame and here's this alum.

I owned an 73 R western I really liked it except for the rubber band engine 237 they won’t pull your hat off in a windstorm even on flat ground strong headwind will bring you down to nothing … but definitely cool looking rig .. bob
