Picked up salvage tractors (for parts) for my old '29 McCormick-Deering and '35 Farmall F20. The salvage yard had gone out of business due to the passing of the owner. The three children, all middle age adults, fought over wanting to keep the yard in business and wanting their share of what it was worth. After almost a year it finally came down to absolutely everything being auctioned off. Sad to see it go as I've walked the acres and acres locating parts for many of my vintage tractor projects. Personal opinion: The two sisters that squeezed the brother into auctioning the estate lost a massive amount of money going that route. I mean, c'mon... I was the only bidder on a 40ish year old working Coke machine that I took home for five dollars. None of my business, everyone has to do their own thing. That brings us to the truck. Along with tractors there were a few trucks, pickups and larger, that were sold. Included was an old, rusty, worn out Mack truck missing a few parts. But most if it was there and I'm a sucker old iron and the lines on vehicles from the mid 1900's. Didn't know they were selling any trucks and certainly hadn't planned on trying to buy one. Took a gamble and decided to join in the bidding. I mean, if I got the truck cheap enough and it doesn't suite my taste I could always sell it or make the money back on scrap. I decided six hundred dollars was all I'd go. When the bidding stopped and the gable struck, the auctioneer pointed at me and said "SOLD, what's your bidder number?" I thought the bidding went higher and I was out. What a surprise! It was getting dark and starting to sprinkle. The auction company workers on tractors and loaders were busy scurrying around helping people get trailers loaded. So I decided to winch the old girl up on my trailer myself. Took a little time but I got her. Got the title. It hasn't been licensed since 1996. Don't know if it runs but was told by son that worked the salvage yard that all it needed was batteries and diesel fuel. Judging by what I've checked out it will need a bit more. But we'll just start with getting the engine to fire. I've never owned a Mack before. Worked on many large trucks and construction equipment and have been well versed in the automotive field for decades. I think I can handle it. Will have many, many questions along the way. It's going to be sitting for awhile with it being cold outdoors. Why not use it for one of the outdoors Christmas decorations? Over the course of the last week we've had many people slow down and a few even stop on the 40 mph road in front of our house. Part of it is the 1950 John Deere tractor lit up in the front yard along with all the other decorations. But I'd like to think it's mainly the Mack all lit up on a photo sensor from dusk-till-dawn. In addition to all of the great help and information you will get from this site you need to send the chassis number to the Mack Museum along with a suitable donation. We live outside city limits on five acres. The closest house which is a couple hundred feet to the side of us... let's just say they aren't very neighborly and we've had issues. Long story for another time. I found it online, chatting with the guy about it, came home from work one day and Susan said "I got you that tractor for your birthday, load the trailer and go get it". I'll get you the info. I have the title and door plate info but didn't learn until today there's a s/n on the frame near the right front shock mount. Want to get that also. Actually, aside from the Mack and Coke machine two parts tractors were acquired. To top it off I also got a Lincoln arc welder (been wanting one for awhile) and a home made metal forge. Sometime next year it will double in size. Needing to build a paint booth. Two welders here now. I learned on a Lincoln arc welder decades ago. Been using a Millermatic 200 since the mid 90's. Susan keeps her daily driver and two play toys there (2005 Mazda RX-8 Shinka and a 68 Camaro SS I've been building on for years for her). To say it was rusty is being kind, but he went from VA to NJ with a way too small trailer to get it and drag it home.
