Can you simply replace a 'air only' tip turbine with a  water/air-cooled version? Or is there some limiting factor. . . like a water port in the block or something...?

Fun is what they fine you for!

Feed from water pump to charge cooler and return line was also near the water pump. I can't fine the MACK exploded parts diagram right now for it.   From what I recall the 320 and the 350 h.p. engines aside from the 40/60% Water/ Air Charge cooler also had a bigger turbo's. 300 h.p. , 300 +  (320 h.p.) and  350 h.p.        Paul

hey paul I saw some engines for sale. one is a 676 with tip turbine (I assume 285 hp) and another 676 with tip turbine (but 350 hp). is this tip turbine the forerunner to the charge air cooler but without the additional radiator?

I was just thinking about getting the 'most' out of a 285hp in a B model... You guys don't believe there is much benefit to the water jacket???

The charge air cooler is mounted on the engine instead of the radiator.. I was told by a MACK Museum person that it was mounted on the engine  to not add length to the nose for the old bridge formula.

The 285 is air to air and the 350 is water/air to air

Not as big an issue as it used to be, but back when we had tight overall length limits it was often necessary to have axles as close to the end of the vehicle as possible to run legal at the weight limits.

The whole design has to do with some of the bridge laws out west.  They would count the bumper to back of a cab as a dimension that must be a certain length. The normal mount of the bumper on any Mack is usually mounted out from the grill.  But  for some reason the bumpers sticking out ahead of the grill was taken into the bridge law formula in some states. So the engine mounted inter cooler was designed.    Paul

Also the engine mounted intercooler(aka-"Cool Power")was introduced in '73. The CMCAC (chassis mounted çharge air cooled),was introduced around '81. The "tip-turbine" engines hung around a while longer,in vocational trucks. Like Paul & TeamsterGrrrl noted, for the Western Bridge Formula.   Al
