That is a wing plow that gets lowered down so you can push back the left lane snow banks on divided highways.

Or take out stray mailboxes...

Billy, Do not know where you are located.

In addition to Jim's answer the majority of the wings are mounted on the right hand side although in areas such as the Tug Hill Plateau in upstate NY with Lake Effect snow, there are wings on both sides and a big "V" plow on the front. Some of them RM 4X4 Macks. Search You Tube and you can get videos of many in operation.

When we plowed at JFK Airport in the 90's,  they used a similar set up to knock the snow banks along the taxi ways down to clear the airliner wings.

Definitely looks like NYS rig.

Actually I thought that was the primary function of a right hand wing- knock the height of the built up windrow down so in the next storm,  the front plow has a place where the snow rolling off the plow can go.

And speaking of wings, any opinions out there on wings on 19,500lb trucks like F-550's?  I'm told a lot of towns in Northeast are going that route.  My town had budgeted almost 120 grand for a new 550 with a wing.  I couldn't believe it but it didn't happen in the end-only because the town ordered an F-550 crew cab and when the chassis got to the body outfitter he broke the sad news..."can't put a wing on a 4 door!

Imagine the first few times with the towplow, you have to get over the "excitement" that your trailer is doglegging a bit

This is an older picture of my '01 1500. The plows have been moved to the '99 2500. And the finished product looking out the driveway.  Hippy

Wow-I'm asking questions about wings on a 19,500 lb F-550 and you have something on a half ton?   any more pix?  How is it attached?

An experienced plow truck driver with attitude can use a wing plow to shear off mailboxes along with their posts, and flip them end-over-end and send them for a good 50 feet or so.

Years ago I saw a driver clip off every mailbox along Ellicott Creek Rd., Tonawanda, NY.  Damnest thing I ever seen.  Wish I had a video of it.
