In addition to Jim's answer the majority of the wings are mounted on the right hand side although in areas such as the Tug Hill Plateau in upstate NY with Lake Effect snow, there are wings on both sides and a big "V" plow on the front. Some of them RM 4X4 Macks. Definitely looks like NYS rig. Actually I thought that was the primary function of a right hand wing- knock the height of the built up windrow down so in the next storm, the front plow has a place where the snow rolling off the plow can go. And speaking of wings, any opinions out there on wings on 19,500lb trucks like F-550's? I'm told a lot of towns in Northeast are going that route. My town had budgeted almost 120 grand for a new 550 with a wing. They are starting the towplow setup, alot of truck to handle IMO. I will probably start double wing training next winter. grayhair Posted February 21, 2017 Share Posted February 21, 2017 (edited) An experienced plow truck driver with attitude can use a wing plow to shear off mailboxes along with their posts, and flip them end-over-end and send them for a good 50 feet or so. Years ago I saw a driver clip off every mailbox along Ellicott Creek Rd., Tonawanda, NY. Damnest thing I ever seen. Wish I had a video of it.
