Jim, where did you spotted it?

The truck at the left (to the right to the U) is a nice looking R I saw a picture of once.

But I don't remember showing it out in anybody's reports along the East coast.

The U-400 platform had a couple of options.

U-401  END-475 Scania diesel

U-403  END-465 Thermodyne diesel

U-410  EN-414 Chrysler 413 V8 gasoline

U-487  ENDT-475 Scania turbo diesel

U-492  CAT 3208 diesel

The engines listed above were not available in the U-600 platform.  I have only seen two U-400 models of the 316 units built and the frame dimensions and spring packages appeared to be the same as the U-600.

Info from a spec sheet shows 464 CID NA, 155 brake HP @ 2600 rpm with 350 lb ft of torque @ 1600 rpm.

A little screamer at 2600 rpm!

Saw action with

U-403  1965-1967 with 124 units built.

DM-403  1966-1969   249 units

MB-403  1964-1968   907 units

R-403  1965-1969   1,376 units

R-403R  1965-1968  96 units  (right hand drive)

Didn't know the Chrysler was an option in a U. Learn something everyday

It would be a rare catch with only 7 built.

WOW. Guess that would be a rare truck to have.  I like the rare or ugly or the "step child" pieces of equipment that most folks just overlook.

The Chrysler 413 was used in a series of B model fire trucks that was built for the U.S. government. I wonder if the U-400's with the 413's were also built for the government, possibly as tankers for the Air Force FD's.

Money, sex, and fire; everybody thinks everyone else is getting more than they are!

pretty sure the B47's also had the end465 thermodyne in in them. seen one at auction about ten years ago with a baby quad 77 series behind it and dual 55 gallon round fuel tanks. kick myself til this day for not buyin it

Would have been a good purchase!

Besides the B-47 (437 units), the END 465 was put in B-13 (124), B-23 (131), B-33 (437) also.

Could be.  I don't have a further breakdown on how the U-400's were used.  The two 400's that I have seen were single axle tractors with Scania power.

The Air Force did have quite a few refueling tankers on a DM-492 chassis with the 3208 CAT engine and automatic trans.
