Memorial Day

I flew to L.I. this afternoon to do the Barbecue for the Long Island Veterans Home and to put flags and pennies on the grave markers at Calverton  National Cemetery.

Wasn't going to do the feed for the Vets this year, but felt guilty about letting my fellow vets down.  So tomorrow and Sunday my son and grandson will be cooking our butts off.

Remember Memorial Day is for the Hero's who made the Supreme Gift to us. . .their lives for our freedom. Take a moment to remember them during the weekend.

 

A coin left on a headstone lets the deceased soldier's family know that somebody stopped by to pay their respect. Leaving a penny means you visited. A nickel means that you and the deceased soldier trained at boot camp together. If you served with the soldier, you leave a dime. A quarter is very significant because it means that you were there when that soldier died."  While this isn’t officially recognized or endorsed by the military, these tiny pieces of metal say a lot about those who bravely defended our freedom.

The coins are gathered up by the cemetery and go into a fund for flags  markers.

My deep thanks to all those American veterans who fought Nazys during WW2 helping to save many and many of Soviet soldier's lives on East front in Europe.

Unfortunately not many in Russia now remember that. The authorities put lots of efforts to lower down the importance of the fact. Mostly during the Cold War and also later. It's not a nice way of "doing a business" on my mind when you grow up your own worth by putting down a role of others and hiding or deforming historical truth at the same time.

You are a good man to see through the propaganda and recognize this, Vlad. And Americans should also remember the millions of Russian soldiers who gave their lives as well.

Perhaps I stabbed our Savior in his sacred helpless side. Yet I've called his name in blessing when in after times I died.

Through the travail of the ages midst the pomp and toil of war have I fought and strove and perished countless times upon this star.

A big salute to all that served or are serving. I have a chance again this year to be in the National Memorial Day Parade in DC tomorrow transporting WW II veterans. There will be 10 antique convertibles for about 20 or 25 vets from different parts of the country. It is a real honor to in their presence.
