I was about 7 or 8 and he had me driving the tractors at hay time..In the winter they used two draft horses and I was told to be very careful of their feet so I couldn't go in their stable without Andy. Never get in the sillo it had poison gas. And stay away from the bulls they took no crap from anything. Every thing else was ok even the bottling plant I could go in and grab a little bottle of milk. Teacher asked what all the "sacks" were hanging in the barn. Lost a bit of color when I told her they were all my lambs and rabbits curing. School asked a few years ago who do they sue if a child gets hurt, Told them not me as they are no longer welcome here. The only advice my parents failed to give was "Don't drink the pump well water". When we kids watered the pigs and chickens we would tilt-head a mouthful out of the hand pump. One day the hand pump broke free along with the well's rotted wooden top plate. Remember looking down in the 3' casement and seeing green algae slime and dead, drown mice floating. Geez, gluten free this, peanut free that, bottle water, blah, blah, blah. I think water out of the hose(well) still tastes better then any bottle water. I have an older friend with kids that get sick if they blink too much(It seems). The daughter is a complete wreck, gets sick all the time and looks like death warmed over. The son is better, but not by much. I didn't know him well when his kids were little, but heard they were OVERLY protective and thus they turned out as such. Tragic. There kids are always sick and when they where young every little cold they'd rush to the dr for an antibiotic. davehummell Posted August 14, 2018 Share Posted August 14, 2018 Until I was 10 years old the house I lived in had just a sink with a hand dug well with cold water only no bathroom. Everyone used a metal washtub for bathing. Out back of the house was the outhouse we used it all year long spiders and snakes you just got used to it I didn't know any better. In the summer the well would go dry and down the road was a little pond we would fetch water from I bet that water was sanitized? We never new any different and most of the kids I was in school with didn't have it much better. We lived threw it fine and dandy. I don't ever remember going to a dr. Gram had a cure for most of the ailments we got. My mother did take me to see about my crooked back and my hands but back then the dr.? said just live with it there was no money for stuff like that. Popular Post 41chevy Posted August 15, 2018 Author Popular Post Share Posted August 15, 2018 Played in the dirt, ate some too, played in the coal bin and ash pail, played at a closed sand pit with the old cranes and equipment, swam in Oyster Bay Harbor right next to Jakobsons ship yard . Dug clams and ate them right out of the water. Go in the barn and help mix stuff like DDT and fertilizers drink water right from the tidal well feed drinking fountain. Even ate school paste and chewed the paint off the pencils Came home with cuts, bump, bruises, sprains, bee stings and poison ivy. Rhulle Cream for the bites and poison ivy, iodine for the cuts,a cold wash cloth for the sprains. Walked to the middle of the harbor on sea ice got a few swats on the a$$ for being stupid. Never really sick aside from childhood things and a rare cold in over 65 years. My liberal daughter in laws boys get a crumb on them it is a panic issue. Both will not eat food from the garden or even a chicken if it's not from the store.
