My parts man says I should use silicone or expect leaks. Any thoughts? I only use silicone if the surface is imperfect; however I like the gray Permatex, (high torque) under a rigid bolted cover like that. Never have worked on that late of E6 I'm aware of however. smorse54 Posted April 4, 2019 Share Posted April 4, 2019 If it has a stamped steel timing cover use a gasket. If it has a cast aluminum cover silicone. Being a 1988 I would assume it is a four valve with a cast cover. Mack Technician Posted April 5, 2019 Share Posted April 5, 2019 Use 3M weather strip adhesive on the steel stamp covers to keep the gasket from squirting out. Glue it, let it set up for a spell before installing covers, no comebacks with that stuff. Cast... don’t use any sealant. If the cast has a cut relief (in ribbon land) make sure there is no oil and completely dry during installation.
