A photo of a 1940s Mack fire pumper from the New South Wales Fire Brigade was posted on Facebook. The chassis was an "E" model. The poster

said that the chassis was built in the USA but the cab and body were locally built. My question is, When did Mack start building trucks in Australia?

Depends on what you call building them

Most trucks came to Australia in a knocked down form and only had a body built back to the fire wall and cowl

The rest was built in body building shops in all big cities around Australia

This applied to all trucks and buses pretty much from all countries around the world

Australia was very big on been Australian made and high Australian content, we had tariffs in place to help our industries grow

Macks started having a high Australian content in the late 50's early 60's

The fire truck you talk of would of been no different

The first Mack in Australia was imported from the US in 1919 (AC). That truck still exists in the Champion collection.

Mack started building trucks in Australia in 1963 and still continues today.

2019 was the 100th year celebration by Mack Trucks Australia.
