Wife and I went to a trade show in Las Vegas.  I had secret plan for that evening - to get some of my money back at the craps table.  Daughter #3 flew in same day and with the same idea about getting back some of her money previously left behind with them.  We meet at the craps table with a gleam in our respective eyes.  So, four guys, one after the other, throw the dice and establish a point.  Then each one of those guys next throws a seven.  Aagh, the house takes every stinking chip on the table.  I am a just a bit disgruntled.  The stick man laughs and says "well, now we'll be able to keep the lights on here for another day or so."

So, the way this works out, The Mirage is now holding even more of our money for us so that we will have to return again to get it back.

Maybe some of you guys have a similar experience to share with us?  Love to hear it!

My wife and I used to run to Sparks NV (Reno) a lot.. Had to deliver 8 AM Monday then wait til 5 PM for our load out to LA. Went to the Alamo (now a Petro??) for a shower and breakfast. We set a limit at $20!! When it was gone we went back to the customer. Sometimes we left in an hour, other days we still had nickels or quarters in our pocket when it was time to leave.

That is similar to what I did the one and only time I went to Vegas. Playing black jack, I would start with $10 and when that was gone, I left the table. If I was up by $10, I would put that $10 in my pocket and when the $10 on the table was gone I would leave the table and so on. Most I could lose in one sitting was $10 and once I was up by $10, the worst I could do was break even.

Never been into gambling at all

Remember as a young bloke doing my apprenticeship I was having lunch at the pub with the boys from work

They were all keen for a bet on the nags and I had go, done my doe and never had desire to try again which is just as well because once Im hooked on something I'm in boots and all, bit like my wise investments in trucks or farming 😉😉😉😁😁😁

It can cut the other way though where you can leave Vegas with some of the house's money.  Different trip to Vegas about ten years back. Same scenario,  daughter #3 drives in from Los Angeles to visit with wife and me while we were there for several days of a trade show.  Two days go by and none of us have gambled at all.  Nothing lost and nothing gained so far.  Middle of the day, middle of the week daughter #3 decides to leave and drive back to LA.  I said, "thought you wanted to gamble some while you were here."  Bear in mind the kid is 21 years old but very petite and looks like she is maybe 14.  During our stay, every time she walked thru the casino Harrah's security guys stopped her and insist she show them her ID to prove her age.  Finally they gave her a coded wrist band to show she is of age.  Anyway, she decides yes, she wants to gamble some before leaving.  We go to the $15. craps table.  She plays a while and gradually loses $100.00.  I give her $100. and say "see if you can win your money back and pay me back too."  Now since it is the middle of the afternoon, there is hardly anyone playing, just a couple other die hards.  Well, dice come around to daughter who rolls, and rolls and just doesn't crap out.  This goes on for a while and other people are starting to notice!  Then the table quickly becomes full, 12 players, and the noise level is  getting loud!  Old grizzled gamblers with cigar ashes down the front of their shirt, etc. When they see daughter is rolling and rolling they start jacking up their bets.  "Give me $200 on the 6 and $200. on the 8." "Gimme a hundred on eight the hard way."  Gimme $50 bucks on horn bet, hi yo."  "Gimme $200 on boxcars." Daughter keeps rolling. Pit boss comes over, looks, and changes the dice.  Daughter keeps rolling and the bets are getting ever bigger. Pit boss is really paying attention now, comes back and changes the stick man and changes the dice again. Old grizzled guys are giving daughter $25 tips and placing a few small bet on her behalf.  Daughter is still rolling and the pit boss replaces one of the box men.  This goes on for a while.  Just to say it can happen.  Of course eventually she rolls a seven and thats the end of it.  A number of serious gamblers made some real big money while daughter was rolling.  With her modest bets she of course made her money back several times over and payed me back too.  It was fun.  But it ain't what you'd call typical...

excellent storys guys,,,ill tell you what ,,,im right here with it...i dont even bother with the casinos...in the last 25 years they have really tightened up the machines....we do enjoy alotta thier buffets from time to time, but i dont feed the machines anymore if i do throw a 20 in once in a while....the thing just takes it in 2 seconds....it wasnt always like that....you used to be able to work a 20 for around ten minutes, not anymore.....bob

Bob, When we ran Sparks in the later 90's we would go over to Balley's for their $4.95 or $5.95 Brunch Buffet. Then "Waddle" back to the truck and not need to eat again until the next day!!!

Later in the mid to late 2000's, when we drove for Wrangler Blue Jeans, we had a trip to the VF/Wrangler salesperson's conference, with all the clothes and conference material, at the RIO hotel in Las Vegas. The buffets were $12 to $18, outrageous!!! It also happened to be NASCAR weekend and they had the machines shut down tight. My wife went thru $35 in the blink of an eye!!

Sunday morning after we got everything reloaded, we stopped down around Searchlight for lunch. A $6.95 Prime Rib dinner and my wife made about $20 bucks off the quarter poker machine in a half hour..

Right on man that’s hard to do these days as I imagine I don’t really gamble at all here but you were talking about the Alamo a while back they used to have really good food there and Sierras SIDS are used to eat it both those truckstops all the time now they’re both corporate America and America food is lousy ha ha same times changes everything and yes I remember 2.99 buffet speaking of Rio casino I had to deliver two huge doors to that place when they first opened 1996 I have never been in there but they tell me the cocktail waitresses are almost nude ha ha I don’t know. Yes like you.. I haven’t been through there in 30 years or so but now that I think about it it seems Goldstrike casino was one of the last structures  before Hoover dam. As I said it’s been years I understand you can’t even get out and look at Hoover dam anymore since the terrorist attack.. Bob

I attempted to visit the Hoover dam on the way home from Reno 2 years ago.. The have a car inspection on top of the hill before you get to the dam.. My Dodge 3500 has a flatbed with tool boxes.. I had to open everyone of them so they could look!! Then to get into the visitors center was worse than airport security, and I had a pocket knife!!! Went back to the truck and headed for the Grand Canyon..
