I was at a repair shop awaiting some parts and there was a late 80's superliner in there for service. On the side of the hood it said "econodyne", and the person at the counter said it was an 88' RW613 with a 5 speed transmission, and he said it wasn't a V8 but a mack inline 6. Just for my own information, which of the inline 6 engines would mack have put in a econodyne superliner with a 5 speed??

Must be a reason almost all diesel engines are inline. inline good for torque, great piston to crank orientation (straight up and down) and each piston connected to a different spot on the crank. True push/pulI…I heard the E9 had its fair share of issues. I also hear that it’s extremely hard to find parts for them today.

Inline 6 are perfectly balanced were as a V8 is always out of balance

Inline 6 has more bearings to support the crank

V8 is or was a smaller physically size to fit into tighter spots than a inline 6 for the same power to weight

Macks E9 was not as reliable in the heads as their E6, why this was the case I have no idea, perhaps it was pushed into production

However if compared to other brands of motors at the time the E9 was comparable to most and better than some

The trouble was other brands soon developed  just as much HP  and sorted out their reliability issues to the extent the E9 fell out of favor

The E7 came along and by and large was a better motor and made good power for most applications

The E9 was eventually sorted but it took a long time to make it the motor it should of always been

Thats my take on it anyway
