Hey guy's..  I had this E-6 machined and new liners installed 2 years ago.  I installed the cam and pistons a year and a half ago, then had to stop to do other engines for this customer.  I had the engine on its stand, I kept it covered and lubed and every once in a while I would wipe it down and spray lube all over it and inside of it.. sometimes I would roll it over a bit..  So today I am back on it, and was cleaning the deck, and cylinders, when I found this....

I know I need to replace the liner, what gets me is how this happened, since I have kept up with it, and kept it clean an free of moisture..

I used 320 emery cloth to clean it up, and it is actually a recess, pitted, somehow..  I'm afraid it will brake a ring..  I guess, my question is more about has this been seen before, and is it possible the counter bore has an issue?  I did NOT install the liners, so I have no idea about counter bore condition..  I guess I will pull the piston out and check the rings..   Good to hear from you Bob...   jojo

It looks like a chunk missing to me according to the photograph just like you said I would be afraid to use it If the counterbore  is warped the liner will not come out without a huge fight … bob

I have a great liner puller, and I can always run a few beads of weld inOTCPT6400-C__55259.1655912308.jpg?c=2 it to shrink it..   The other 5 are fine,   Phewwww....

I forgot the darn picture

it kicks butt !!! It's the only style I have ever used at the Mack dealership, so when I started building engines in my Road service, I bought one..  They are $1000.00, and worth every penny to me..  jojo

No keep going, I like tools. God for bid anyone every robbed your garage. But most people would walk buy all that stuff in there and be like nothing but junk in here! Little do they know how much money is in there.  As for the pitting. Not sure bud, just oxidation made the imperfections show through?

I dont know Mark...   When I had the block done I asked them to press the liners in.  They bought the liners...  I would assume PAI,  But I don't know, and I can't find out..  However, when I pull this liner, I may be able to see a stamping on it..

Truth is.... I have never been in this spot before..  I buffed it really good, and the pitting is below where the rings will ride, but I have no idea how long it will run with this small amount of pitting.  It may run great for a long time..   and because it is an E-6....  I do not have real skills for installing the liner..  I heard about dry ice, but never done it.  I was raised on E-7's...  I have a liner press for those engines....  when you deep freeze the liner in dry ice, will it just drop in?  I bet I would have to move quickly?  of course i will have the block clean and ready to go..   jojo

Thank you Glenn.  I was hoping I could do that...  I use a hone on E-7/E-Tech's, to get them cleaned up..  I made a press with steel plates and Threaded rod's, and a short 12 ton bottle jack,  and I have a piece of plastic silo liner that is 1/2" thick to put on top of the liner..   I've lost count of how many liners I pressed in with this rig. I was hoping I could use it instead of dry ice.  I was concerned about the liner sticking half way in and then i have to pull it out and try again..  Jojo

Joey ! When you up root that liner check the outside of it for size markings ! They offered P numbers on these ! Glenn correct me if I'm wrong But   OVERSIZED  liners weren't uncommon  can't remember the sizes 2 thou increments I believe ! I have installed up to 10 thou over before! pain in the ass honed for ever!

You are correct on the .002 over size.I have hone that much out of the block before and it takes some time.I remember our red headed night foreman as homing a block one night with a maybe 3/4 drill motor that was very slow speed.i saw him run the sun hone too deep in the block and hang the crank which in return stop the drill motor by slapping him in the cods with one of the handles of the drill. He set down on the fender of the B model and just set there.I say do you hurt and he say yes then he drops his pant to find one cod with no skin on it.Thats when i started to hurt. Those old END 170 engine was bad to deform the block bore.Later engines with the 20 head bolt heads was not that bad and they let the liner be installed some looser.
