Popular Post 67RModel Posted November 30, 2022 Popular Post Share Posted November 30, 2022 I stumbled upon an old 24 page thread in the "other truck makes" about a GMC General truck. Its a great read if you have time to sit down and follow the whole 24 page story. Anyway, I couldn't help but notice how many really active forum members there were then (2014-2017). I noticed there were a ton of "BMT Lifetime" members and "BMT Benefactor" members that just are not here anymore. If you look at their profiles it seems like most of them disappeared in 2019 or early 2020. I came on board in early to mid 2020. Any idea what happened to all these guys? mechohaulic Posted November 30, 2022 Share Posted November 30, 2022 I thought I was only one questioning (in my head) the departure of so many senior members; many of which are up in rank 13/14 of 14. sometime back i asked about the number of log ins that logged on /off same day never to reappear. thought it was a scam dating site or something . alot seem to be around '16-'17. i've guessing this site came in to existence around '05 from some members profiles . The 1st being antiquated and replaced by this one. I joined BMT in '02 or '03 I believe. I don't remember for sure anymore. There have also been several members from the beginning of the century who have passed, some struggled with update to the forums & not being tech savy. As was previously mentioned there was an issue that started with politics and that caused many to leave, some were banned because they didn't understand that "anything goes" does not belong here. Prior to Facebook I was a member of about a dozen different forums involving old trucks, racing, wreckers, horseshows, cars, and many other things. Facebook pretty well crushed forums to the point that only this one & Just Old Trucks are still around for me to enjoy. The rest are now gone. There WAS a massive purge a couple of years ago. Like Terry said, it had to do with a big blowup, with some members getting all out of sorts over something. Barry had no choice but to ban a bunch of these members. A shame it had to come to that, because some of them were extremely active and knowledgeable. But, these things happen sometimes. Some of these guys can still be found over at justoldtrucks.com. I go there from time to time myself. It is a good site, but this one suits my interests better. Jim Hancock is over there, and is still posting some of the coolest old pictures in existence. Smokstak used to be my favorite but all the forms are now either all politics or generator technical jargon. I got to know quite a few really smart guys on here, and if we have a topic that's not truck related, we have a couple places to do that. That way, those that aren't interested in the topic, can find one that suits them.. Just my thoughts.. I do notice more and more topics about the MP's, and lots of issues with trucks that are less than 5 years old.... to be expected.... I Guess... It has been a great forum, besides the few scuffles that have come around when a few people couldn't agree to disagree. This is one of only a couple forums that I am still active in. But, the discussions over there are not as much in my wheelhouse as they are here. I avoid the political threads here. That's not why I come here. And, we won't solve any of the world's problems in those threads anyway. Barry and the guys do just a traffic job of making this site great. Look at the JOT site layout for comparison. Very simplistic. Not very inviting. This one is super-well organized and easy to look at. All the different discussion and topic sections let me go to what I am interested in without muddling through a bunch of crap I don't care about. The notifications work. The messaging system works. The online users link is fun to look at sometimes. It is just professional in every aspect. Plus, the knowledge base on here is un-freakin-believable. I won't mention all the names, but you know who you are. If one of those guys doesn't know the answer, then you're asking the wrong question! There was a thread on here a while back that discussed in more detail what happened in "The Big Purge". There were 1 or 2 people who caused most of that, and most of the others just got caught up in the whirlwind. It happens! I mean, if somebody pissed me off badly enough, my response might get me banned from here, too! But, I try to avoid those situations so I don't wind up in a pissin' contest over something that doesn't even matter. For the most part, the folks on here are very respectful of each other. Ones who are not don't fare too well. One thing that JOT has which is very interesting is their "What Am I" section. Jeff Lakaszcyck, who has a lot to do with the JOT site, and runs the WAI? forum, has a wealth of knowledge and an unbelievable supply of old iron photos. Go over there and check it out, and let's hear some other opinions on that. Might lead to a whole new activity for us. It was the ATHS forums originally, it went through a couple upgrades, and the downfall was when ol Bill Johnson(x-pres of ATHS) decided it was useless to have and pulled the plug after a couple fellows worked at getting set up in the new format. It was a chit show. Eddy took the helm and with financial support of Peter J. started JOT so that NO one could ever pull the plug or discard any photos or information. I still poke around on JOT and meet up with fellow members at conventions.
