Maybe you mean the RS models like the the rubber duck Mack in the movie Convoy. I believe it was to accommodate larger radiators for extra cooling on the mountains and also on the RS700L versions accommodated larger engines from Cummins, Cat and even V12 Detroits..

There is a difference in the fender height on early RL/RS700 western hoods vs late. Top picture shows the later hood. There's about 6" between the white stripe and the top of the fender. Bottom picture shows the early hood where the white stripe is right above the fender. Same truck before after the hood was damaged and replaced. Wish I had known then, I would have fixed the early high fendered hood!

Hey Mackaholic that’s a real good looking truck with that color scheme I’m wondering if that truck didn’t belong to MidEast truck and tractor out of East Canton Ohio

Thanks!  This one was repainted to match several trucks we've had over the years. Started as a lowbed truck for OC Jones, a contractor here in California. It was green from the factory.

tall hood R models usually refer to the later model years of the Mack Western RS700 and the RS600/valueliner.

i think the change to the tall hood was around 73 when the plus 3 cab came out?

the reason for the change was for larger radiator options. it also simplified the bumper and hood assembly by omitting the hinged grill used on earlier models.

i think the hoods had 4" added to the sides.

here is my tall hood 700

For what it’s worth I like the bottom better but Of course if your not happy that doesn’t help Bob

Me too.  Top one looks too tight around the tire.  Bottom looks more "R-like" to me.
