2001 RD690S pre-purchase questions

Question

Hey guys,

Still looking for a truck and ran across a 2001 RD690S.

Question 1

The VIN is 1M1P270Y71M055417.  Looking through all the info I have found it looks like the Y in digit 8 indicates "Class 8 GVWR Truck tractor with air brake system".  Does that mean it started out as a road tractor and was converted to a dump truck?  If it was a C in the 8th digit it says "Class 8 GVWR Truck with air brake".

If it was a conversion are there any red flags to look for?

Question 2

Really confused about RD688 vs RD690.  From what I have read it was used to indicate Econodyne vs Maxidyne and the typical transmissions used (with Maxi's using a Mack trans).  Was this still true in 2001.  This is a RD690S with a 400hp Mack motor and a Fuller 8LL trans.  I thought 690's had Mack transmissions in them.

Thanks for you input,

Dave

That VIN comes back to a RD688S, built 4/11/2000.  Engine is a standard ETECH 400. Trans is a Mack T-2090. steer axle is a FAW12 ( 12,000 pound I believe) . Rear carriers are Mack 200 series with 4.73 gears. . Has 10 leaf camelback springs .
