We all make them. Sometimes we get lucky and the consequences are minimal and other time the consequences are massive. However, almost all of us know what we SHOULD have done in hindsight which is no different than knowing what someone ELSE SHOULD have done after seeing the results of their decision. I do not know what the driver saw from the seat of his truck of what he was thinking at the time. Looking at the video, I did NOT think that crossing looked problematic from the side let alone from the front and the drivers attention was likely on "looking both ways" rather than the crossing itself. If the "hump" in the crossing was more pronounced, it would have caught his attention maybe, particularly if he has a LOT of experience pulling lowboys. that crossing looked reasonable level to me. I have seen a LOT worse.

I'm one of those drivers that doesn't just give my opinion on observation and seeing an end result of someone else's misfortune. I've been there with a lowboy and thankfully in my instance there was no train insight. But the thought was still in the back of my mind but myself and my fellow logging crew members just worked quickly to git off the tracks. So after that I avoided rail crossings at all costs when pulling the lowboy. Didn't matter to me if the crossing looked OK I would find another way to go.

I always say; don't laugh at the car with a flat tire stranded on roadside , in a moments notice I may be the one stranded others are laughing at. we all have ideas of what the lowbed driver should have / could have done, or what we would have done. a major unfortunate situation. seems the train stopped in short distance after crash possibly from impact. start of video train was a long distance away doesn't appear as too many cars hooked to engine. could train have stopped sooner?

my experience is if i am going out with the low boy i pretrip looking for trouble spots and plan alternate routes. then pre trip them too.

but that goes back to when i ran the escort service. if anything happened, it was on ME not the driver, because i planned the trip route.

possibly driver was trying to race  over the crossing as lights were on and gates were coming down but figured wrong. the lights and crossing bars  are usually working long before a train shows up. study video closely. he's on the track better then half way across , you can see lights are flashing with crossing gates dropping. I've sat at crossing wondering " Were's the train?" . realize under the -I fu---ed up situation , minutes go like seconds.

Standard is the gates are supposed to be fully lowered 20 seconds before a train reaches the crossing. If a lot of high speed trains come through, the gates will be triggered far enough away to ensure the lights flash, gates lower, and that they make it all of the way down at least 20 seconds before the train arrives. If the crossing is set up as a distance trigger based upon the speed limit of the line, a train moving slower will have the gates down longer than the 20 seconds.

Spot on, we have no idea how long this may of been since he got stuck, may of been only moments before hand

Article said he was only there for a few seconds before the train triggered the gates...not much time to do anything.

...and depending upon how good this driver's lawyer is, the railroad might just be cutting him a check for the damage to his truck, trailer, and load. I remember reading an article a few years back that explained it...gotta try & find it again. The tracks are not supposed to be more than 3" higher than the road surface 30' away from the crossing...and if they are higher, a sign must be present indicating a danger for low clearance vehicles. If the tracks do not meet this requirement, the railroad is liable.

never saw one.

but than again, any roads here that have a raised rail grade are also 4 ton max weight.

The couple of times it's  happened to me Swishman I was off road and couldn't get enough traction to unlock

So I just jacked up a drive axle and shoved blocks of wood under

Gave the truck a boot full of power and got a bit violent with the clutch and was off in 1/2  a hour

I do not think we have the folding neck trailers up here in the States?? Just detachable neck trailers, But I think the lift mechanism to reattach should be able to lift the front of the trailer a few inches???

brocky, my trailer will lift the front of  the deck over 18 inches. normal drive height is 8 inches off the ground.

and i can raise the rear of the deck close to 10 inches with the rear air ride suspension.

no matter what type of trailer in  question, the big question while bottomed out on train tracks is ; how much fu--in time before train shows up. the set back on the 1/25th beam trailer I'm building IS the gooseneck operation. have been studying many photos .  neck is built . detach/ connect portion is involved. 3- cyls  to raise lower.
