Mack T318 grinding while shifting in mid gears

Big Blue Mack

Question

I recently purchased a 06 CV713 with a t318 transmission. I’ve noticed while splitting the mid gears it will grind for a split second and go into gear. I’ve been trying to do some research but haven’t found much. What could be causing this? Thanks in advance!

Dry o-rings in the shift cylinders.  They get neglected. I suggest buying oring kits and re sealing them.. also make sure the air pressure is correct, above 90 psi.

Check the rear yoke bolt first this is thirst indication of range pack failure! If the bolt is loose lock tight and tighten it! If not post back it’s a bit pricey to repair!

Update I was not hitting the shift points correctly. My dad a more skilled driver drove the truck and it shifted like butter!

Oh Hell..  DCW..  you nailed it..  I bet I'm the only guy here that double clutches... :)

Double-Clutch, Float, whatever!  Still have to do it right!

I'm just glad he didn't have to start spending money on that thing!

Ive gotton to meet a lot of drivers that came from an Eaton tranny, and go to a Mack Tranny, and had a bit of a learning curve.  They said it was not as smooth to shift.. That's an understatement..

The Mack just always felt “normal” to me. Never had an issue with snEaton, though. Of course, all my Mack experiences had 2 sticks!
