Wheel Seal Question

The acceptable tolerance I think is 1 - 5 thousandths of an inch end play 😂. But like other have said if your not blowing out seals regularly your wheels are not flying off.....your good. snug down on the bearing. Back off a little. and torque the snot (by hand) out of the outer lock nut. 

The indicator thing works really well to check what you're getting.  Once the lock nut is tightened, it removes all the "slop" from the threads on the adjusting nut.  So, depending on the pitch line clearance of the adjusting nut and the spindle, the lock nut will remove a different amount of clearance.  1.5 flats might be good on some.  Might need more or less on another.  I like to check for clearance with an indicator after the lock nut is tightened.  But, in all reality, as long as there is a little clearance there, it's probably not all that critical.  If there is no clearance at all, well, that could cause some issues.  Too much clearance...yeah that could cause problems too.  But the sweet spot is fairly generous.

MACKS,  as far as using heat,,,  I expect it is done buy guys with good skills...  unlike whoever installed the wear ring in the picture.. 

what if you can simply slide a new wear ring onto the spindle with no tools required? It’s a tight fit but goes on easy. Picture of old ring in question

you can,,,  just be sure to not warp it and it needs to be flush with the leading edge of the spindles seal area, or it will leak, also when you are sure about how you are goining to install the seal, put a light bead of RTV on the leading edge of the spilndle and once it's seated wipe off the excess RTV..  should be just fine after that..

Somewhere I have an exhaust tube adaptor, it is just right for installing speede sleeves on front axles. I had to paint it red so it didn't get used on some exhaust job.

that whole 1038 piece comes off ! comes with the new seal I believe!

It does and it has an o-ring behind it. I was confusing the wear ring with the 1038 piece. I know better now.lol. The 1038 comes with a corresponding stem o seal but I’m curious if any one piece seal will work with the 1038 piece.
