Where to source clutch cables

Where is a good place to start looking for a clutch cable replacement for my 75 R600? Mine's not broken, just want to stay ahead of that game.   Is this s dealer item?  How do I measure it to know what length this particular cable is.

Dealer item I expect.  Though dealer may or may not understand how to look up the VIN, the last 30 years of VINs they just want the last 6 digits.

The cable on mine had been replaced.  The one they put on was longer than the original.  It did not hurt, as it just made a little bigger loop.

Bought a R700 a couple years ago and lost the cable on the way home.  From what I remember there are 3 lengths available.  A good Mack dealer should be able to get you what you need.  

I was in a bind and was able to get a local supply house to make one for me.

If u want to measure yours use a piece of rope,end of threaded rod to end of other threaded rod..

I wonder if you could use a PTO cable? Like what we had in trucks before air op. PTO's

When I have the cable broken in a Cruiseliner at the moment I was purchasing it I went to a local home supply store, bought 2 meters of steel cable stock and 2 easy fix clamps. Put that portion of the cable into the original sleeve (it was relatively solid though) and orginized a loop on each end of cable making it a U and clamping. Not a factory style but I got the clutch operational. If really needed I could fabricate quite quality replacement cable tinkering a bit more.

Sounds like my closest dealing thinks they found the right one.   It's on order....we'll see what happens

I assume you will keep the old one in a bag or box, for later use?  You never know.. I posted on another thread on how I re-lube my cables.  It works, but doesnt do anything to fix the inner lining or excessive fraying..  Do you want me to post the info again?

I used to take my dirtbike cables off and poke one end through the corner of a ziplock bag and go around a few times with elec. tape to seal the bag to the cable. Then pour a couple ounces of ATF in the bag and hang it up.  ( Kinda like an I.V. bag) in a few hours, or over night,all the ATF has poured out the other end.  Just an old way to keep my cables lubed..    On shorter cables I have used a drill and spun the cable.  like a screw pump, i could dip it in ATF and it will pull the ATF through the sheath, and come out on the drill end.  it takes a few minutes to do it this way..   Jojo

I will certainly keep the cable on the shelf for the day that I need it!   

Thanks for you input on lubing the cables.  I think that's an important step to longevity and reliability.   I used to coil an entire cable and place it in a bucket of oil of some sort, and let it sit for a day or so.  Not sure if it did anything, but I don't think it hurt.

Mine showed up today AND it was the right one!!!  That's always nice.

I managed to fit the spray nozzle of of Fluid Film can into the cable sheath and held a rag super tight around it and gave er all the way and got Fluid Film coming out of the opposite end after a while.   It was a little messy but that was a quick and easy way to pre lube the cable!
