Well, I take that back. I did buy a used 87U model and Fontana California back in 1989. They had a bunch of them that came from Golden State foods it was only two years old.

ive posted this befor,,,had this one in 1989,,,ive posted it before,,,,i dont know why i didnt wait to take the photo, till i had a better looking front box

Did it have the chassis mounted aftercooler?

I just wonder if some (late?) U's used that grill and was there the reason having CMCAC?

You know, I don’t remember it was too long ago. I just wasn’t happy with the  performance. Even a strong head wind  would hold you back It was almost like running a 237 except it did pull the hills. Much better than that one but I did get out of an E6 350 when I traded it for that one the E6 did a way better job

What sort of weight did you pull into the head wind?

Diagonal wind across the front and flat open treeless country knocks the wind out of 320 with a tall trailer

Back to 40 - 50 MPH until I  reach trees or some bumps in the country side

And yes that truck does look the goods Bob

well it was mainly blowing south when i was heading up..but double trailers or triples ,,with any kind of wind even with the 460 i had when i retired ,,,,3 boxes with headwind,,,no help at all....and a slight incline will pull you down to nothing,,,but i only had doubles with the U model.bob

How much more weight was typically put in the front trailer?  20k/18k or 24k/14k for 38k total.

That was a good looking U.  Tall rubber also.  Was that usual?

A lot of times I had 26 to 28 at the front box since I had a twin drive

I don’t know Larry it had bud wheels and I don’t remember what size they were. It was too many years ago.

All pretty impressive to me

I gather there's a lot more mountains were this operated

The axle weights in the U.S. are a lot less than the rest of the world

I'm guessing this has a lot to do with when all the big highways were built across the state's, trucks were slower and loads a lot smaller

Jay Leno often mentions how in the 50's and 60's people were happy to cruise along at 50 - 55 MPH

So nothing needed as much power

Speeds in Australia are much slower, 65 MPH max for trucks, 55 MPH road trains

14300 steer axle

19800 single axle with duals

36500 tandem axles

44000 tri axles

Wide spaced tandem axls are more but I  dunno how much more

Enjoy your lunch when you get to it, and don't plonk your ass in front of the T.V. as you'll nod off 😴

That was interesting note Bob about that big difference in properties of 300 4V compared to 350 4V. I belive 300 4V was EM6 so Maxidyne and E6-350 is Econodyne. But physically they're both almost the same engines. The difference must be in the fuel pump settings and the turbo (if I'm not wrong). So the fact you shared surprizes me a bit.

I have both types of engines in my trucks right at the moment. But didn't experienced 300 4V on a highway since it's not road ready.

I think the E6 was a two valve. I thought they would be more compatible, but they were not that E6 was a running son of a bitch. Well, I finished the velvet adjustment. I was gonna set the timing, but I figured that’s enough for the day. It’s a lousy day with no sun.
