Mech, glad you are here. Take a look at the other thread im posting in. Its about pulling a RB inj. Pump.  I posted some info, but you may/will be able to fine tune the info..

Yeah, the 2 valve was much tougher. PLM pumps on the 4 valve kinda sucked too. APE pump was much better

E6-4V came into production in 1985 if I'm not wrong. 

And many were equipped with Ambac pumps, Robert Bosch took place closer to 89.

Trucks with E6-350 4V were 688 trucks - R688, MR688 etc. Trucks with generally similar EM6-300 4V were 690 trucks - R690, DM690 and so on.

weather doesn't cooperate and  motivation is low !! take a mounted DM tire and roll it up the street then back again;; rain or not!! cost less then gym and results way better. like the "farm boys" carrying the 100lb bales of hay across the field. 2025 is ten yrs since open heart surgery (2015) .heart DR said to me "don't come back here after retirement (2017) 20 lbs heavier, I'm10lbs over  ;have put off going back for check up ;;suppose to go back 4 yrs ago.  retirement is a challenge in many ways. days go by and the pounds add on. as the parts get older repairs are more difficult (experience talking!!). i'm making an appointment very soon with DR. ; not Dr it will be funeral director.

Needs two people as far as I know 

One at the pump pumping and one turning the motor over slowly backwards and forwards 

It's called spill timing out here, has been 20 years since I have been involved in doing this

I made that alone. Attached a can of fuel higher than the pump inlet. So the stream was forced by gravity. Very sharp way of setting, a pump shop calibrates plungers that way. But care and attention is needed when removing the delivery valve. And sure a piece of old fuel line.

OK, thanks for that input. I have gone through the manual a little bit and it’s not very clear on anything or at least I’m not reading it right kind of confusing so far and I don’t wanna clean up valve covers and put them back on until I’ve got this right it’s a lot easier to find compression stroke without them on

Accessive smoking was the original problem. Norm Taunton suggested I advance the timing a bit, and that will probably cure it He told me that quite a while ago it sounded pretty legitimate to me. But velvet adjustment was also a suggested to me about 45 years ago by an older hand in LA and it worked on the 180 I had at the time I did find one valve that was too tight after second go around originally thought two cylinders off, but I was not going in the proper sequence kind of a long story now I’m just rambling but I did find one  valve tight number four cylinder exhaust maybe that’s all it is i’m hoping this issue doesn’t turn into a huge trial and error caper .. bob

American pump ;after SUPER CLEAN top of pump . remove  hold down nut -- 1 1/4 wrench ;pull barrel and needle valve. replace barrel /hold down nut. helper starts the engine turning while watching flywheel marks(degrees). fuel stops flowing from pump ; it's on mark. spill timing complete. for the Robert bosh I remember having a tool for barrel alignment. basically a 3-4 in slotted bar which clamped to #1 cyl also slotted end went over cly2 and three
