Can anyone identify this Mack Diesel engine

It sure looks like the White/Hercules that FJDRILL mentioned.  But I can't find anything about when/where Mack used those engines.  Sure would like to know more about that.

Sorry I'M no help,but to agree it is not a Buda design.

Conti was famous for casting a name into manifolds when a mfg bought their engine. I would guess may be Herc did the same?

Never saw one like that either. Too bad we don't have Glenn or Mike H to pick their brains.

Does seam to be a Herc.

 Here is a pick with vertical exh but everything else seams to "line up". I'd say 100% on the ID. Thanks to the poster who first said Herc.

less than 100 hp, makes it unlikely to be even a yard goat. No air compressor seen, so what was it used for? They bought enough for Herc to cast their name in the manifold.  A real mystery?

Something about this is strange. The second set of pictures the OP posted shows the engine has an over center hand clutch bolted to the fly wheel. I don't think this was installed in a truck. Possibly Mack had a contract with the government to build some stationary equipment. Certainly a puzzle.

I was thinking generator or some other stationary application.  Like Geoff said, not enough power for much of any kind of truck.

It definitely had a 2nd life as a power unit, but the vertical down outlet of the exhaust points to vehicle use. Most power units like the one I stole the picture of from E bay, have a straight vertical up exh. Any stationary use, I can't fit with the vertical down exhaust.

 Large fork lift?  Airport tug?

Was Mack still producing railroad equipment as this time? Maybe it came off of some sort of yard shunt locomotive

The way the air cleaner stand on the intake, a carburetor can be mounted easily.

The low output would make me doubt that.  In the 40's my K-7's were 21000 GVW and had more HP than that. I just can't see Mack putting less than 100hp in any truck they made. I admit I have no paperwork to back my statements on what Mack did or didn't do.

What were Mack gassers in terms of Hp?

I think either Oliver or maybe White also used Hercules diesels in their tractors. I wonder if the manufacturer casted the manifolds with their name in or if the manufacture did. 

Did someone in the past do this just to screw with us?!

It has been well established, that it is a Herc, re badged with Mack cast into the manifold. Hp rated at less than 100HP .

I am wrong! According to Wiki (and we all know they are infallible) the B20 came with en 291 gasser. at 107 hp, so a diesel of the same aprox displacement might have been installed in the smallest trucks.  I stand corrected!

A B20 with a small diesel.  Now that could be.

There were 124 B13's made.  Odd number should have been a diesel.  Can't find any information on what engines came in those.

Also 131 B23's made.  Again, odd numbers should be diesel powered.  Same problem.  Can't find a lot of info on those either.

Considering the clutch lever mentioned, this could easily have been a truck engine, later converted to power a generator or a sawmill.

Speaking of sawmills, I had a cousin who ran his sawmill off a 50's model END-673 out of a wrecked B model.  Still had the 9-speed overdrive Duplex behind it.  Even still used the parking brake on the output of the trans.  Plenty of power and plenty of speed options!  Overkill, you think?
