I was curious if the CRD92/93 series carriers will interchange into the same axle housing as a CRD202/203 and vise versa?

Also, one of my trucks is a 2002 cx613 with the CRD203 carriers per my local mack dealer. I understand they are a heavier built carrier than a 92/93 series but what I don't understand is why they would put them in an air ride tractor as 38k rears. I'm just curious on that.

Yes,,, did you confirm the carrier series yourself? You can clean the paint off the sloped area to the left of the input housing. The info is stamped in the housing, using a prick punch, and not actual stamps, also, dont be aggressive with a grinder, you will grind the numbers off..

The 200 series is defiantly built better in some respects than 92 / 93 the housings don't change cause there was no need to change ! The housings worked good for the most part ! The gears on certain ratios didn't stand up well to the increasing horse power of the day ! Hence the change to the 200 series ! Which did stand up quite a bit better !  3:87 - 4:14- 4:42  Ratio behind 350 horse power and up don't stand up well! 4:64 would last a bit better  BUT! something had to be done!

The CRD203 are in a 2002 cx613 I have with a e7 460 and 18 speed. Maybe that explains why the factory put 202/203 carriers in it instead of 92/93?

I did verify they are the 203 series as Joey suggested. I've had a couple trucks with 92/93, but never owner the 202/203 series before.

Update: 

I wanted to update this thread with some information while doing this swap in hopes it will help someone else out incase they are in a situation like me and needing to swap. 

 

The 202/203 will indeed fit the axle housing that the 92/93 came out of as you guys suggested, but talking to few others BEFORE i posted my original post, there seems to be some confusion about this. Some folks say they are not interchangeable.....they technically are interchangle with an exception.  Axle shaft length. The only problem we encountered in this swap was the axle shafts are different lengths due to the 202/203 having the bull gear offset about an inch towards the long side of the axle housing due to the 202/203 case design. So the crd92/93 long side was to long, and short side was to short to fit the crd 202/203 properly. 

 

So in short, the 43 spline 92/93 long side axle shaft will be LONGER than the 43 spline 202/203 long side axle shaft by about an inch, and the 43 spline 92/93 short side axle shaft will be SHORTER than the 202/203 short side axle shaft by roughly the same.

 

I hope this information might help anyone interested in this.

Right!

 

You know, it's interesting to get the 92/93 carriers out on the shop floor and set them next to the 202/203 to actually look at the differences between them. The 200 series are quite a bit more robust internally,  but looking at both series still setting in the truck you'd never really know just how much more they really are.

another thing about the 200 series, is that the spur shaft housing in the 200 is a one piece design. So if you are doing a repair that requires the spur shaft housing to come out, you have to pull the bull gear.. Mack rears require some very expensive essential tools..

Wow, I hadn't give much thought to that but I see what you're saying Joey. As far as the tools go, I've been reading my manual quite a bit and yeah you're right there's definitely some specific tools for overhauling these.

they are a MUST HAVE.  the caging tool for the bull gear bearings for example,  the power divider holding tool, is another one. and then ther is the ability to torque the input shaft to 1500 lbft.  I miss building these. its been a long time now, but if I ever found the tools at auction, i would buy them..  I used to build Mack rears, trannys and engines when I worked for Mack at 2  dealerships.  Anyway, good luck bud, and keep in touch..   Jojo

Joey do you have any pictures of these tools I have built a half dozen of these an the only Tools I had were the ones for 92/93 had know idea at here were caging tools! guess I just made due!

We located some shafts at a salvage yard that came from a set of 44k axles that had crd202/203 rears in them. I want to say the long side we needed was right at 45" length and the short side was 36" but I'll get the part numbers from them when I get back home. Goody's truck parts in Toledo has a ton of Mack axles, housings and diffs. They had what we needed
