I discovered a pretty big hole rusted through the gas tank on the driver's side, partly hidden under a thick coating of bondo. So I decided to paint the tank that I took off the passenger side when I put the new tank on, and put it on the driver's side. Turned out it was a bit smaller than the rusted out tank, so I put a couple of pieces of 2x6 under it so the straps would tighten. As you can see I painted over the lettering on the doors with some Hunter Green Rust-Oleum, it matched up pretty good. Then I thought if the fenders were a little lighter shade of green, that would look pretty good. So I went to the Walmart store and bought some Spring Green Rust-Oleum and sprayed the fenders too. I thought it looked great. Then I thought the stripe should be black instead of silver, so I painted that too. This morning I rubbed a little ceramic type polish on that dull paint, got the side and around the corner- you can see where I stopped just to the left of the rear window. And it has chips in it, plenty of flaws that you can see when you look at it close. But the main thing we wanted to do was make it look totally different, especially after the seller guy was less than honest about the condition of the truck. The condition he said it was in and the condition it was ACTUALLY in were two different things. We wanted to get it painted but couldn't find anybody that was willing to do it. We had decided to go with red with black fenders, I always liked that paint scheme. So that's when I spray painted the doors, looked pretty good, so I decided to do the fenders, they looked really good I thought, then I decided to change the stripe to black- I like it! Just painting the fenders and changing the tanks really changed the look a lot. I've been polishing and waxing on the old paint and that's starting to shine a little bit too. I ran out of the Mother's ceramic polish, that's the only thing I found that would bring any kind of shine back to the paint. Then I waxed over that after it cured a day with some Meguiar's wax and it's looking better all the time. 5 Quote Producer of poorly photo-chopped pictures since 1999. I ordered more of the ceramic polish, definitely need to do the hood and the top of the cab. I'm not even going to try to put an AC compressor on the engine, but maybe a battery powered unit, an RV unit, some kind of portable AC that would work- anybody rigged up something like that before? No, absolutely not, I was wondering about the air conditioners that are self contained, you have to put ice in them. Their ads say it lasts for 6 1/2 hrs. I always read the reviews on pretty much everything I buy, but these- some people say they're great, other people say they're a waste of money. I have always thought that on a antique, you could add an electric coolant pump, isolate the coolant through the heater core, and use a tube and shell heat exchanger as an evaporator. Essentially making a water "chiller" then circulate the cold coolant through the heater core. I not sure how well it would work on an old leaky truck with an old heater that could barely keep it warm in the winter, but it wouldn't require any holes in the cab. I think this is the way I'd go. I have a Mack sleeper with a Red Dot unit in it, they are very compact. Geoff Weeks Posted July 31 Share Posted July 31 (edited) Sure, you can put an refrigerant compressor on anything with V belts. The condenser may take more work to fit, there are frame mounted condensers, of course roof mounts, which would be period correct. No :bolt on kits, but it is all possible. I built my own APU before they were widely produced, there are plenty of options in terms of parts to build a system, but buying a pre packaged parts, Red Dot makes many bunk units. IHC used under the passenger seat heater/AC unit that is very compact and is in the 1.5 ton cooling range and gobs of heat. Early (70's) 4300's had all the controls on the seat base, making it a complete unit that could be bolted to the floor pan, and would need 4 holes for coolant and refrigerant. The big question is if there is enough "head room" to put a passenger seat on top of the unit. Most newer cabs that take a full size air seat can, but trucks that used T bar or fixed seats, (lower profile) may not have the head room. Used parts, can be cheaper way to go. New door lettering of that color or multiple colors with that green as the main one would suite the scene perfectly too on my mind. Ok, wheel hubs?... Personally I would go for the dark green spokes and the light green on the rims.. Also a pair of "Hollywood Glaspak" mufflers so she will bark some???
