Question

Spring guy said saddles  wore out he put cheap aftermarket ones on and they are worse then before.  I had enough  and went to mack and got oem. They don't the ears at the end , what would  be the difference.  Blurry picture  is the week old saddle  moving.  Even after being  tightened by a multimeter  gun20240815_064530.thumb.jpg.0eb368909e2471a5abc4207d4d2ad723.jpg20240817_163408.thumb.jpg.582ed4c40d4a254f0a49bdf72a88fbc7.jpg

Not sure they really won't let you in shop to look

From your one picture, the truck looks clean. Not likely they're shot, but ????   Springs are probably junk at this point. If you look at the hole for the center bolt when they're apart , check for little cracks from the hole going outwards. One of the effects of loose U bolts. All thesee little 16ths of an inch here and there add up.

another case of not  hearing the noise, attempting to make a call on past experience. for the springs to be that worn is a questionable situation (for me). alot of $$$$$$ being spent on ; well maybe this will fix it : hair line spring cracks shouldn't make a noise. cracked leaves would be seen. walking leaves show up. how far out of line are the trunnions on a turn??? did you try making a hard turn when the noise shows up , then stop the truck =SET THE BRAKES  then raise body and do an outside walk around checking rear assemblies  for noise ?? is there a torque arm for side sway which may have worn ball joint ???

Vinny ..  Meet mechohaulic..

Mech, i think his truck was NOT speced with transverse torque rods, so 'twist' controll is up to the saddles and bolster boxes..  I never could understand why those torque arms werent install on ALL vocational and off road trucks... grocery getters need not apply..

Mech, this is the same dude with no torque rod.  I mentioned the cracks cause I believe the truck's been used with loose u bolts. Couple questions about this one tha are unanswered, and the owner said he can't go in the work area to actually look.  Kinda sucks that he's in this just trying to get his truck fixed.

"what do you mean ,installing these arms on back of my new truck "?? that will cost too much and add extra weight. I can spent that money on all these fancy lights to make my truck pretty" !! different world I guess.

now I see the relationship between this saddle and torque arm topics, under this condition I would understand the leaves cracking havin to take all the sway movement. making a noise loud enough to be heard in the cab while moving would indicate one heck of a crack with major walking between the individual spring leaves themselves. have seen 55lb rears having completely broken leaves walking NOT having a audible noise heard in cab. I would guess the noise would be a snapping type .

The noise is probably the spring moving on the saddle.  If it's been used with the U bolts loose , that's a great way to crack the springs outwards from the centerbolt. So......if he goes through all this and ends up with a broken spring afterwards, he's right back where he started.

Yes I herd the noise and saw the back wheels jump out. I guess if I was that mech guy I would have stopped in the middle  of the intersection  raised the body with a load on  and stuck my head in-between  body and frame. Everything has bin changed except  springs.

Mech, was for sure talking about after you load at the pit, make a sharp turn in the pit, lock it down and get out and look..  I know you arent doing the work, but the more you know about the issue you have, the better you can be served by the repairman..  Mech 'IS' a repairman...  your in the right place Vinny..

Yes 20 to 40 or so I use to do these myself not at 60 , father had a shop . Something is shifting  its not the trunnion bushings  because  I did look the springs  are moving  in the cheap 234 dollar saddles  that where put on.in February and again last week , I was thinking  the sides of the springs  are wore and saddles don't fit tight,or center bolt is broke. Mack saddles  where over 900 a piece.  The way they changed saddles  didn't take springs off cut u bolts and jacked it up. Maybe they missed  something  wore on the inside of spring

I am so disgusted,  both sides are  like this took truck to mack they said u bolts where loose , spring  guy says no he tightened  them, he don't like them no ear saddles,  but I see it if they had the ears  they would  have broken  off. Is there a cheap multiplier  I can buy to use.

based on earlier posts; this is the unit WITHOUT side torque arms ?  is that situation same ?  seems to be a case of :he said? He said. mack blames spring guy , spring guy blames Mack. all the while it's your check book which keeps opening.  have changed more springs then I want to think about;  rarely used a multiplier.  1 in air gun or long pipe . challenge here is a triaxle has all the weight on the drives where as a tractor pulling 53 ft trailer weight is distributed.  4 new U-bolts and side traverse rod .

I forgot  to mention  the first day to me it looked like they were moving  ,I took a picture  of undnieth  as you can in picture  it was moving. Went back next day he put multiplier  on them while  truck was on the ground  and they tightened 20240821_064226.thumb.jpg.cd7ca9c7859012826a11fd96db943331.jpg
