This morning at 8AM , while  an excavator was working at the base of a vertical granite cut, a huge section above broke loose burying the cab and tracks so the only thing visible was the boom, dipper and bucket.  Came down with such force the boom cylinders were sheared from the cab and the rods were bent.  First responders used sound and I imagine some cameras to snake them through the mess to confirm a fatal.  If you google  "Quarry accident, Sterling Ma" you will probably see news aerials.

Looks like the site had a bench cut above but at the point where the excavator was working it looks like the bench cut stopped at that point and the face was probably another 30-50 ft higher-complete guess.  News reported machine was working within safe zone and  I imagine operator was  pulling broken rock out.

Think about this guy and his family

A friend who lives in the area brought to us to my attention the day it happened @Red Horse .  Not knowing there are other quarries in the area I assumed it had happened at the former Pandolph-Perkins quarry where my Dad worked for years.
Appears from the videos I’ve seen that Onyx is in the process of building a new plant at an older quarry. Hard to say why that corner had been left the way that it had.
May the operator rest in peace.

I had same thought when news headline broke...This site is relatively new as a quarry compared to Perkins.  Machine was a 374 Cat..A later news follow up a day or so ago, showed an excavator digging a hole not far from the edge of the break..no clue what that was about.  Ask your dad if Heidi ran the scale house in his time.

Unfortunately we lost my Dad in 2018 @Red Horse, but I’m pretty sure that he trained Heidi before he retired in 2007. 😎

Sorry bud…. Losing your parents is the worse….bob
