My Mack in the photo has an air intake vent on top of the bonnet, my Mack has a maxidyne engine with a tip turbine water cooled. mechohaulic Posted August 23 Share Posted August 23 don't recall too many steel nose having the hood intake. your picture shows an air cleaner having dual sections and two discharge pipes. one for engine other for tip turbine cooler way most were set up. Mark T Posted August 23 Share Posted August 23 That truck has a Strata Tube. That's where it gets it's air to blow through the intercooler. From normal way through the cap of the filter canister to from under the hood area via that second pipe at the canister. For cold weather operation as it is subscribed somewhere (in the truck?) and that seems as a Canadian thingy. So that second pipe on (that Canadian style) filter housing is NOT for the tip turbine. This way the scoop in the hood works its role. Asking the original question. No, Maxidyne tip turbine was way far from not the only engine option used on R's/RD's. Plenty of different Mack engines installed during 4 decades of production starting from Thermodyne gassers and ending with Mack 4 valve E6 and E7 (in the restyled RD's). Also engines of different brends could be used including such exotic as two stroke Detroit Diesels and Chrysler gas V8's. And if you want to learn as much as possible on your Mack truck the best (and the only?) way is reading this forum! The truck used to move houses for a living and it used the Crain for lifting the beams. It has 3 winches on the back as well. The truck is difficult to drive as it has 3 gear boxes, did any other Mack’s have 3 gear boxes not a mack, but about 40 years ago i moved an oil refinery cracking tower 6 miles to the waterfront to be shipped from new jersey to texas. 16 foot diameter 124 foot tall. weighed close to 250 ton. trailer was a mammoet with it's own 300 HP hydraulic powerplant. tractor was an autocar tri drive with a 903 V8 cummins and three 100 ton planetary rears with 5 speed deep reduction box, 5 low box, and 5 speed main box for a total of 125 possible gears to select from. top speed of the truck was only around 40 mph, but move speed was only around 1/2 MPH. the move ended up taking close to 24 hours though because the ground walkers on the passenger side missed an offset rail at an angled train crossing that blew out a whole mess of tires. something like 20 or so. it took almost 12 hours just to change the tires to get us back rolling. 2 2 Quote when you are up to your armpits in alligators, it is hard to remember you only came in to drain the swamp.. Usually hook to wiper's when on pull's air from under hood " warmer "....
