In the early 70's hauling petroleum out of Syracuse NY at night, I had to chain up a single outside drive a lot of times to get from the main road into a distributor's yard and back out.  You also learned to lay a S curve in the discharge hose so you could move the truck out of the ice pockets, made by warm tires, while you still had some weight on the drives.

We talked about that in a different tread a lot of three axles out there have a tag axle. Doesn’t help you at all when you’re empty. I also used to carry a pair of cheater chains the length of chain with a hook on the end and you wrap them through around the tire through the rim and it’s enough to get you out of a spot, just takes a couple of minutes to put them on just getting out of the yard as you mentioned

I even got caught a couple of times of my pants down had to chain up the Mustang to get home. I used to carry a set in the car just in case I had to use them twice. I have a four-wheel-drive F150 I usually drive in the winter but a couple of times we had a surprise snowstorm when I got back

Bob, Do they allow you over the pass if you have "lnsta-Chains" or "OnSpot" drop down chains? All the emergence equipment here in town have them.    .....Hippy

yes they do,,,,allotta box trucks coming over with boose use them as do school busses

it snows so hard and heavy in that area,,,sometimes its so severe,,,they cant even plow the roads, they have to use cutters,,not sure if most of you have seen them ,,thier giant snow blowers they have to use to clean surface roads

We are around 40 miles east of the big mountain and we really don’t see a whole lot of it here mostly just cold air. A lot of winners will get just a few inches half dozen times and a lot of times it’s all melted off by noon. Yes, I cry way more about the weather around here than it really is.

I used to chain up for traction in the muddy farm fields..

I only chained up one time, ever. Somebody gave me a set of chains that fit my Ford Ranger pickup one time, so when we got a pretty good snow I decided to try them out. Put them on and drove to the beer store and back with no problems, and no shoveling.

But there have been a few times that I wished I had some in the truck, because I would have sure used them. Like this time on rt. 60 in West Virginia-

Buffalo?.. that's a whole different world in winter, I've been going up 219 to Orchard Park and you couldn't see the road or anything else because of the lake affect effect snow. I was going to Buffalo one time, snowing like crazy. I had to stop several times to clear my windshield because the wipers kept freezing up. Road was completely covered. I finally said "screw this, I'm gonna find SOMEWHERE to stop". Except there really isn't anywhere to stop up through there, so I kept going. When I got to the job site in Buffalo it was all clear, no snow anywhere. It was about 10 degrees, but no snow.

Yes, I imagine they would and Tom I had the same problem coming out of Montana one night it was 25 below  0 they told me with the older Kenworth you have to pull the sunvisor down to get defroster to work right of course we don’t have to worry about any of that now… bob
