Question

I have a 2000 ch613 that recently started clicking in the high range gears. It's a 10 speed and it mostly does it in gear 4, which is the 1st high range gear. And it only does it when I let off the accelerator and the engine is slowing the truck down. It clicks and feels like it's coming out of gear. Not sure what it might be please help!!

ok...  My next question is meant with respect...   Do you know how to repair this transmission?  In-chassis wil require special tools..  out of chassis, will require a strong back..

if you were my customer and you asked me to search for this sound i still would pull  covers  just cause I hate pulling transmissions then rear ends! Just saying! Once burned twice shy👊

I dunno knothing about these modern Mack boxes

However,  on a older Maxitorque box I would say something has got in behind the sliding dog

Has any covers been off the box and silasticed the lid on

This can force the silastic inside the box

It then drops off and the transmission and the transmission pump picks it up pumps it into the sliding dog

Due to shape of the gears it gets stuck there and prevents the dog sliding all the way in

Simple to fix, pull box out, stand on bell housing, lift apart, pull shafts amd gears out, clean crap out, put back together with proper gaskets and no sticky crap

Just takes a lor of time

Is this possible on these modern Syncro range changes

I'm good with tools and have done my fair share of mechanic work but I have never done any transmissions. I don't have the specialty tools either. I'm pretty sure I could do it if I had the tools and procedure instructions. Is it overly complicated or just tedious?

My truck is a 2000 model ch613 with a T2090 transmission. Do you know anything about those? The cover has never been off but I'll be removing slave valve and top cover pretty soon after I check the rear ends

You're right and I'm hoping it's a rear end issue. I'm going to pull the side covers in the next few days. I did notice they are leaking. Also I am able to rotate the drive shaft a little bit, maybe about 1" play side to side by hand with the truck in neutral, is this normal?

Well when you get done with that, do as Joey suggests

Yank it out, plonk it on it's bell housing and lift the sections off

It will be pretty obvious if something is wrong

And no I have never worked on one, bit gears are gears, it will be obvious if something is wrong

Thanks Paul. Question, if I remove the top rear top cover would I be able to see if there's a problem with the range shift synchro? I just want to try and verify before I pull it. I checked the rear ends and they're fine

No, unless its major, but it cant be major because you can drive the truck. The sliding clutch in the center of the synchro is hidden from view. What i have found many times is the clutching teeth wear to a diamond shape, and then the sliding clutch spits out of gear.  A Mack synchro is large and has 2 clutch baskets, one on each side and is directional. It resembles a motorcycle clutch..

Not unless it is really screwed and bits are everywhere

But if it's that bad you wouldn't be able to drive it

I just read Joey's reply, exactly as Joey said

Joey knows more about these than me, but common sense will get you 99% of the way

Wow that's alot of svc manuals. I was thinking of trying to get ahold of some for my truck. I'm still debating if I should remove the transmission myself or take it in and have it done. I've never done a job this big and it's kind of daunting 😵‍💫

Also, do you think the range selection valve, or slave valve, could cause something like this? Maybe a leaky o ring or something?

Something i just noticed, broken mount on the drivers side. Think this could affect it? It only clicks and jumps a little bit when I let off the accelerator in high gears. I can drive it all day without it doing anything if I keep even a tiny bit of pressure on the accelerator...

as far as my book set goes...  I was hoping to find a buyer for a set at $500.00.....  Each book values at $50.00 for the small ones, and $100.00+ for the big ones..  But in your case you may only need 1 book..  Not trying to sell you anything just feel like posting my thoughts..  Unfortunately, there isn't a large demand for what I have, even though these books are important..  No-one is re-building Mack drive trains anymore...  its all automated tranny's and laptops for diagnostics..  jojo

yep,,  you have to take the batt boxes. or the fuel and air tanks off, and so-on, then cut the huck bolts, and thats just what is outside the frame, then there is the transmission, which has the ''rear engine mounts'' on the bell housing..  Dammit..

F.... IDK if it's engineers or the board of  directors.

Like we have been saying for 2 decades now....  They make it so that a good mechanic cant make repairs because of the rules and regs dictated by Volvo for example, couple that with the required tools to do the repair, cost sooo damn much money, that it in some cases is not worth buying if you dont have a steady flow of a particular truck model. It forces you to go to the dealership..  And of course you have the computerized side of repairs also.....   To me, the truck makers are going to put their reputation on the line if folks just stop buying trucks, because of the crazy high maint. costs..
